Good morning students,
* Below is a chart of externships that remain open for Summer 2023. Remember, you can find your externship in Symplicity OR create your own.
* If you want to turn your internship into an externship, make sure it is an eligible type of placement (which can be found in the attached Information Sheet). So long as it is an eligible type of placement and your supervisor agrees, I will allow you to make it an externship. There is no special paperwork you have to complete to have it “approved.” Reach out to me if you have questions.
* Any form your supervisor needs to sign will be given to you once the semester starts
* To participate in externships you need to do these things: 1) secure your placement, 2) register for the class (either Externship 1 or 2) when you receive the summer schedule, 3) once registered, email me your completed Student Performance Agreement (attached).
* When registering, please read Dean Tilly’s note about paying for your externship. There is a note about billing at the end of his memo to you all.
* If working with a judge, ask them who to list as the supervisor on your Student Performance Agreement (the one they want me to communicate with directly). This is often a clerk and NOT the judge themselves.
* All things externship related can be found in the Law Career Services Blackboard page (Information tab --> Externships folder)
* There are a few funding opportunities listed at the bottom of this message

In addition to the above internship/externship opportunities, I also want to provide information about possible funding.
1. ProVantage Scholarship (ID# 16619): This scholarship (up to $10,000.00) allows a student to complete an unpaid summer internship with either a Christian law firm or a faith-based organization. Priority will be given to rising 3Ls but rising 2Ls may apply. Submit application after you have secured an internship. JusticeMatters, Transitional Support Legal Aid, Catholic Charities: Immigration Legal Services, and Guirguis Law Firm are examples of eligible sites. All but Guirguis currently have summer openings on Symplicity.
2. Equal Justice America (EJA) stipend: Students with placements with a NC-based civil legal services organization serving low-wealth families may apply for semester stipends (up to $2,000 for Fall/Spring and up to $5,000 for Summer). Apply at EJA’s website: https://equaljusticeamerica.org/fellowships/law-student-fellowships.
3. HEADS UP: Campbell Law has 2 internal summer grant programs sponsored by Campbell Public Interest Law Students Association (CPILSA) and the A.J. Fletcher Foundation. Applications will open March 24th, so be on the lookout in Symplicity and our weekly newsletter. Students who are interning (not externing) in a public interest law organization are eligible. For the purposes of these funds, “public interest law” means any employment that is unpaid in which the student provides legal services which directly or indirectly serve the poor, needy, or indigent, or clients who have an acute need for legal help due to age, mental or physical condition, financial vulnerability, or lack of access to the courts. It may include legal and social causes that may lack easily identifiable clients (i.e. environmental law). It does not refer to judicial clerkships or placement within a prosecutor’s office. You have to had secured your position at the time of applying.
