Dear Class of 2025,

With great excitement for the future and deep sadness for what I am leaving behind, I announce I am leaving Campbell so I can pursue a position at the University of Minnesota. Please know that this was the most challenging step of my life to date, and without a doubt, the most significant thing I am leaving is you all.

When I moved to North Carolina 14 years ago, I never imagined I would complete two doctorates, three residencies/fellowships, and officiate in a final 4. And I never imagined leaving. However, throughout all those years, the most vital lesson I have learned is the importance of continuously seeking spaces where I can flourish.

What I want to express is thank you for giving me that space. Thank you for allowing me to be my best self and for accepting me in all my forms: The Funneler guiding you to safety through a Haunted House, a boxing coach teaching special tests of the lower quarter, your Trail Guide on the nature walk of the physical therapy profession, a pirate guiding you on a voyage on the Regulating Agen-Sea with Policy the Parrot, and a professor who locked you in an Escape room of MSK puzzles. My greatest joy came when I was in the classroom with you and saw the growth of your patient examination skills over your first year.

Thank you for being you, too. Your authenticity and desire to grow made it easy for me to bring the same. Thank you for your trust and respect for me. You embraced skills check where the expectation was not a misstep and grew from the nerves of your first check on vitals to high fiving through your final one in MSK. Thank you for embracing an MSK course where all the pieces were separated and then appreciating when they all came together. Thank you for eagerly treating the Clue and Thanksgiving characters who needed your help. Oh, and Frankenstein, too. Thank you for being willing to share your own passions and pursuits with me. Thank you for being willing to embrace your Goofus when practicing what not to do for safe patient handling and showing compassion for your own Goofus when you lined up the goniometer wrong.

I was prouder than you know watching you complete a modified examination of Santa Claus after a total ankle arthroplasty and a little kid who loved the aquarium in your first semester of PT school. I was even prouder of your resilience and dedication on display during your first complete patient evaluation with first-year OSCEs. If you share with your patients an ounce of the joy you shared with me in my office or before class, you will heal them inside and out just like you have blessed me. And thank you so incredibly much for your kindness and support. It is rare to find, and I don’t take for granted for a second how lucky I was to be in rooms with you surrounded by it every week.

I will forever remember each one of you and the journey we have been on. I hope you will keep in touch. Whether you want advice about school, post-DPT life, or everything else, I care about you. You will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will miss you dearly. Now enjoy your break, go get this last year of PT school, and always be you. Because each of you are amazing in your own way.

Sincerely,
Dr. Buzzell
