Students,

I want to email again regarding the situation. First, please let me know if you want me to verbalize any of this as a group. I am happy to do so.
First, you will find that I will always be as transparent as I can be. There are some legal limitations to that of course. The COVID situation is and will be ongoing. We are trying to keep moving forward each day and by something as simple as walking into the grocery store or a choice of attending a gathering can result in a situation days later. You know that full details on protocol are on the website. Let me review a few things.

If you have any symptoms, stay home and reach out to me. We can discuss the situation and next steps. We are finding that each situation is unique. I am collaborating with student health on steps so it is not me or any one person making uninformed decisions. If you are around someone that finds that they were around someone who was exposed, the outcome of that can vary based on when that original person had symptoms and when they were around the other person. The person with potential exposure will stay home seven days and be tested around day 5 before returning. The people who were around the person who was potentially exposed but not determined positive and had no symptoms are not contacted or asked to quarantined. If someone has a positive COVID test, they have to isolate for 10 days then they return. If someone is around someone with active COVID symptoms or within 48 hours of when symptoms started, they quarantine for 14 days with a test around 5-7 days. I could probably go on but these are basically the recommendations we are following.

The long story long is that we need to keep communicating, keep aware of any symptoms, keep making choices that allow you to finish your courses and go on clinicals, and keep being professional. If you are not comfortable being in class, then we are trying to work with that through recording. It is not perfect but an option. We are not forcing you to be in a situation that you are uncomfortable with. We certainly have expectations you have to meet but are trying to be flexible when necessary to meet these expectation. Always communicate with the faculty member if you are not going to be present and generally why. I expect (unless excused) that students always participate in class/lab yet now it might be remote or in-person depending on the individual's situation. I need to be in the loop with this COVID situation so please keep that in mind so it can be managed department-wide.

This is a long email but I want to end with a high note. We would like to offer each of you the opportunity to attend CSM virtually. We will pay up to $200 which is the cost for an APTA member. There is a discount of $50 if you are a section member and 50% off if you attended the conclave. The process for this will be a follow-up email since I need to jump on a 2pm call.
