Good evening,

I am emailing to invite you to the third session in our Social Justice Hour series. Please know that prior attendance at the first session is not mandatory to attend this session. This session will take place on Thursday, September 10, at 12pm. WebEx link to follow.

A few things to note:

  * This session will remain closed to only students in the Class of 2021 and three faculty facilitators (Dr. C, Dr. Smith, Dr. Eubanks)
  * Please use the GoogleDoc link below to post reflections from the last session or questions to be addressed during this upcoming session (there are sections for both)
  * We encourage questions (via the GoogleDoc or live) so this may become a more conversational session!
  *   GoogleDoc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1nBpFgy63AKLXdPVyGOC6OJSAtAIohl1YsIwIcklnOfg/edit?usp=sharing
  * ***UPDATE***As a member of the CPHS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, I am leading the efforts to create a similar series that will span all the programs in CPHS. That way, these issues can be discussed interprofessionally. I will provide a brief update at the beginning of the next session.

To reiterate from the first session email: Four of our students and two of our faculty members (D'jsha, Jalecia, Monique, and Obed, along with Dr. C and Dr. Smith) have offered their time and experiences to hold an open dialogue to include Q&As and discussions about race, differences, and perspectives. As a white woman of privilege, I acknowledge that discussions about race and racism are difficult and uncomfortable-as they should be-but absolutely necessary to create change. We hope people see this as an opportunity to learn, grow, and gain awareness in this space in our personal lives and practice as PTs.

Our hope is that this will be an ongoing occurrence that will progress and expand to include other social justice issues, not those surrounding race alone. For several reasons, we have decided to open this opportunity to only students for our first session. In the future, we hope for these sessions to be on campus, in-person, and open to students, faculty, and others within our department and/or college.

In order to foster a safer environment for learning, please use the link to a Google Doc where you can anonymously submit reflections from the last session or questions/talking points to be addressed during this upcoming session. This is completely optional, but we hope to see you there. Thank you again to our students, D'jsha, Jalecia, Monique, and Obed, for their time and efforts in preparing for these sessions.

Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions.
