Hi all! See below for the town hall summary!
On April 15, 2025 at 1:00pm, the P1 class held a town hall. 27 students and
4 faculty/staff members were in attendance. Cody Brown, Chaplain, led the
group in a prayer. Next, Kyle Crevling, President, and Trent Almond, Vice
President, brought up the following issues from the concern form and
classmates voiced concerns as well. The notes from each point of discussion
are below.
*Overall feeling of lack of preparedness for recent OSCE:* Dr. Moore
acknowledged OSCEs are high-stress and said he would have Dr.Asbill address
them further. There was uncertainty about whether the short notice (of
about 24 hours) was intentional or an oversight.
*Integration and Averaged Grading of PPC as with Med Lit:* Dr. Asbill
supports combining Med Lit and PPC grades and potentially combining the
classes in the future. Dr. Asbill plans to bring the idea to the curriculum
committee again to benefit future classes. He anticipates PPC1 and PPC2
becoming a combined course with a lab component. He will also try to work
to get grade integration for PPC III & PPC IV this year.
*Not receiving PowerPoints in Advance:* Dr.Asbill acknowledged that
reviewing the powerpoints ahead of time is an effective way to study but
needs specific details about which classes aren’t providing slides and who
to contact. Kyle will work on compiling a list to send to Dr.Asbill
*Temperature issues in classrooms:* Acknowledged by Dr. Asbill as a
legitimate concern that they are working on.
*Testing accommodations:*There were issues reported with students not being
able to make it to the exam review following their test in the
accommodation setting. Dr. Asbill noted that this would be a quick fix by
ensuring the testing accommodation center receives exams properly.
Additionally some students couldn’t register for electives due to
accommodation complications. Asbill emphasized that there was flexibility
in elective registration and that students will ultimately get what they
need. He noted that in real-world scenarios, extra time for counseling a
patient isn’t realistic, but that they would try to work with students who
need accommodations. Dr.Moore advised students to speak with Ms.Laura Rich
for OSCE-specific accommodations.
*Group reassignment concerns**:* Some students have expressed wanting
groups changed and some do not. Kyle suggested a poll to gauge interest in
group changes. Dr. Asbill said groups are typically randomized each
semester but emphasized the importance of learning to work with diverse
team members. Students are encouraged to talk with their groups first
before escalating to professors. A poll will be sent out to the class to
gauge interests in keeping or changing groups. Be on the lookout for this
soon.
*Block Exam Content Concerns:* A classmate brought up concerns about the
balance of exam questions between PPC and Endocrine. It was pointed out
that PPC, a 3-credit course, had significantly more questions that felt
more in-depth, while Endocrine seemed to be tested at a much more surface
level. One example shared was a lecture with 70 slides in Endocrine that
only had 4 exam questions, compared to a PPC lecture that had around 20.
Classmates agreed that this made it hard for students to know what to focus
on and how deeply to study. There was a shared feeling that the number and
type of questions didn’t always match the amount of content covered.
Students also noticed some issues with the exam breakdown for Endocrine,
like professors being listed even though they didn’t teach during those
weeks.
Reminders and closing remarks:
-
P1s were encouraged to complete course evaluations, due soon, since
faculty actually read them.
-
A feedback form will be sent out after Monday’s block exam to evaluate
the class leadership performance and for suggestions on fundraisers and
social events.
-
Kyle reminded students about classroom etiquette, which will be
reinforced in the next town hall in the fall.
-
*Dr. Moore and Dr. Asbill congratulated students on completing their P1
year!!! :)*
