Dear PA Students,
We hope this message finds you well. As you know, Western North Carolina is currently experiencing a devastating disaster that has impacted countless lives. In times like these, we must come together as a community, supporting one another while prioritizing our mental health.
For those of you with loved ones in the affected areas, it's completely normal to feel a range of emotions, from worry to helplessness. Here are a few suggestions to help you maintain your mental well-being during this challenging time:
1. Talk About It: Don't hesitate to share your feelings with peers, friends, or mentors. Open discussions can alleviate stress and foster understanding.
2. Limit News Consumption: While it's important to stay informed, constant exposure to distressing news and/or social media can be overwhelming. Try to limit your media intake to a specific time each day.
3. Practice Self-Care: Make time for activities that bring you joy or relaxation. Whether it's exercise, reading, or spending time in nature, nurturing yourself is crucial.
4. Utilize Campus Resources: Our school offers mental health resources, including counseling services. If you're feeling particularly affected, please reach out for support (Resources are listed below).
5. Get Involved: Consider volunteering or contributing to relief efforts if you feel able. Helping others can provide a sense of purpose and community connection. Your classmates have already begun collecting donations in the classroom. In addition, we are awaiting further information from NCAPA on ways to help PAs and PA students in WNC, and we will inform you of these initiatives soon.
Remember, it's okay to feel upset or anxious during times like these. We are all in this together, and supporting one another is vital. Please take care of yourselves and reach out to any faculty or staff member if you need assistance.
Wishing you all strength & resilience,
Dr. Gerstner & Dr. Ward
