Subject: Colloquia on Afghanistan - Save the Date

Dear Campbell Law Community,

Yesterday, two explosions at Kabul Airport killed 13 U.S. service members and at least 90 Afghans. As the crisis in Afghanistan continues to unfold and intensify, a number of legal issues remain front-and-center in our national consciousness. Whether it's a consideration of the president's authority to deploy or withdraw U.S. forces to Afghanistan, the use of attorneys in conducting military operations, the president's legal authority in responding to yesterday's attack, or the legal status of the thousands of Afghans fleeing the Taliban, the law remains an important consideration that will shape our collective understanding of the crisis.

To help facilitate a conversation and understanding of these events and the role the law plays, we will be hosting a special colloquia on Afghanistan. Please join Professor Fields and myself on Tuesday, September 7, at 12:15 in Room 307 for the colloquia. During the colloquia, I will draw from my experience as an active duty military attorney, my deployment to Afghanistan, and my National Security Law course and scholarship in discussing the legal options and considerations in both the deployment and withdrawal of military forces from Afghanistan, as well as what legal options remain to respond to threats there. Professor Fields will then draw from his experience working with international refugees in Tanzania and his Immigration Law course and scholarship in discussing the legal status and rights of the thousands of recent Afghan refugees.

Lunch will not be served, but please do feel free to bring your lunch to eat during the colloquia and to come and go as you please.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to Professor Fields or me with any questions. I hope to see many of you there.

Thanks for all you do and be well,
Prof. Ghiotto
