Dear 1L students,

I want to invite you to participate in an interest meeting next Thursday, September 4, at noon, in room 303, to learn about a moot court competition I strongly encourage you to consider trying out for next year, when you will be 2Ls (or in your 3L year). Participating in the interest meeting will also be a way for you to find out more generally about business/commercial/corporate offerings at Campbell, with or without an international flavor. I teach Business Organizations and Sales & Leases at Campbell.

The competition is called the Willem Vis Moot Court and the final rounds take place in Hong Kong and/or Vienna (Austria) each year. Students selected on the team and then assigned as oralists in the final round get to travel, for free, to Hong Kong or to Austria and network with students from other law schools all over the world. We typically also attend a number of preliminary rounds, called pre-moots, in the US (New York, Chicago, Atlanta, etc).

Participation in the Vis Moot Court Competition involves writing two briefs, practicing moot court argument, participating in pre-moots, and traveling to the final rounds to argue before international judges and against law students from around the world. I coach the team this year, with the help of the ever expanding network of Campbell Vis alumni, who are now practictioners throughout North Carolina. The problem involves contract law ad there is also a procedural side to it, where there is some sort of issue (a conflict of interest, lack of jurisdiction, untimely filings, etc). It does last 6 monhs (October – March) but it is rewarded with 3 credits through a class taught during the Spring semester.

Please check out this video put together by last year’s team (https://youtube.com/shorts/okhAtXPJWs4?feature=share), which consisted of: Imani Henderson, Lara Innes, Cole Maimone, Cole Rasenberger, Nicholas Wilkins, Meghan Drum, Sofia Gomez-Ayala, and Jessica Osborn.

Happy Labor Day weekend!
