Welcome to Campbell Law from the Director of Competitive Advocacy.
As first year law students, I would like to take a few minutes of your time to put some things on your radar for this year and next year.
In January, UNC Law hosts a 1L mock trial competition in Chapel Hill, NC, the UNC Kilpatrick Townsend 1L Mock Trial Competition. If you hear 2L or 3L students talking about "Kilpatrick," that is what they are talking about.
Kilpatrick is run by the UNC Law Mock Trial Team. So, it is all student run, and the UNC Law Mock Trial Team members are the judges for the rounds during the competition.
No coaching is allowed by official coaches or the Office of Competitive Advocacy. However, you can get advice and guidance from other students (2L's or 3L's).
If you want to participate, you should begin making friends and setting up a team of 4 to 6 students now.
The Kilpatrick announcement usually comes out right around Thanksgiving, the deadline for team sign up and a $5 per student fee is usually January 1, the problem is released on January 1, and the competition is held at the end of January in Chapel Hill. Campbell students who have competed in the past have enjoyed the experience. I have attached last year's rules and problem for you to get an idea of what the competition is like so that you may determine if you want to compete this year.
Campbell Law highly encourages your participation in Kilpatrick. And, if you have any interest in competing for Campbell Law through the Office of Competitive Advocacy during your 2L or 3L years, Kilpatrick is your first step in that journey.
Each Spring, the Office of Competitive Advocacy holds tryouts to determine who will be on the following years Campbell Law Mock Trial Team and represent Campbell Law in competitions across the country. You must be a 2L or 3L to be on the Mock Trial Team; however, you will try out at the end of your 1L year to be on the team for your 2L year, and/or at the end of your 2L year to be on the team for your 3L year. There are currently 24 students on the Mock Trial Team and our first competition is Sept. 4-7, in San Francisco, California.
I hope that each of you will give due consideration to trying out for the Mock Trial Team near the end of the Spring semester.
Welcome to Campbell Law, where we make courtroom-ready attorneys,
