48 students will be trying out for the Mock Trial Team over the next three days, beginning at 5:00 p.m. and ending at 9:00 p.m. each evening - Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

For those of you trying out:

  1. The people watching will be the Director of Competitive Advocacy and others associated with competitive advocacy, primarily our mock trial coaches. Because our coaches are working attorneys in the local legal community, the number of people watching the try-outs will change during the evening with more joining after they end their work day and some leaving early due to family commitments.
  2. Please bring the Mock Trial Team Application form, completely filled out, with you to your try-out. Alternatively, you can also scan and email it to the Director of Competitive Advocacy, rshekmer at campbell.edu<mailto:rshekmer at campbell.edu>, no later than 4:30 p.m. on the day of your try-out.
  3. Please be 15 to 30 minutes early for your try-out session. You may wait in the Advocacy Suite. Some try-outs may take less than 10 minutes and others may take the entire 15 minutes. However, in order to be mindful of the coaches' time, we want to move as efficiently through the try-outs as reasonably possible. Your being present early will help that happen. Hopefully, the try-outs will not run behind schedule but, if that does happen, please be patient.
  4. You are to give an opening statement as the attorney for the Government (the prosecutor) at the start of a jury trial before the district court. The use of the appellate opinion is solely to provide you with a charged offense and facts to work with. You may not add any facts. You may use relevant federal statutes, such as to determine the elements of the offense. There is a hard 5-minute time limit on your opening.
  5. You will be evaluated on preparation and delivery. That is, how you organized your opening statement, what facts and/or issues you chose to highlight and/or address, and how you deliver your opening statement.
  6. Students may not watch another student's try-out.

Good luck to everyone trying out,
