On Behalf of the Faculty Committee on Community, Diversity, and Student Life

Dear Students in the Class of 2025,

I hope your academic year is off to a strong start!

I am a member of the Faculty Committee on Community, Diversity, and Student Life. This Committee typically enjoys participation by three ex officio student members. One of our ex officio student members graduated last spring. The Committee now seeks to fill that vacancy. Toward that end, we invite applications from 2L students interested in service on the Faculty Committee on Community, Diversity, and Student Life.

If you have interest in serving on this committee as an ex officio member, please submit an email of interest (under the subject CDSL COMMITTEE APPLICATION) along with your resume to Professor Mary Ann Matney at matney at campbell.edu<mailto:matney at campbell.edu> on or before Monday, September 11, 2023.

As you consider this opportunity, please make note of the Committee's current charge:

Charge: To prepare and recommend activities, policies, and internal practices to enhance community, diversity, and student life; to serve as a continuing forum for consideration of students' expressed needs and concerns; to ensure that all student organizations are functioning effectively and that proposals for new organizations are appropriately vetted. The work of this committee relates to ABA Standard 508. This committee reports to the Vice Dean and the faculty.

In 2022-2023, this Committee will:

  1. Work with the Dean to implement the recommendations of the DEI consultant Marion Cloete, consistent with resources, staffing, and agreement.
  2. Continue to develop a program to comply with the new accreditation standards dealing with training in racism and implicit bias, both as approved for the upcoming year and long term.
  3. Collaborate with the Student Bar Association about how training on issues of implicit bias and systemic oppression can be provided to the student leadership.
  4. Work with student groups to promote forums on topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  5. Develop a process by which students could request funds to attend conferences that would provide them with knowledge and tools to share with others on issues of leadership, implicit bias, and cross-cultural competency.
Please also feel welcome to reach out to any member of the Committee with questions, if any, as you consider whether to apply for ex officio membership. The Committee's current membership includes:

Suzanna Geiser , Chair
Lucas Osborn, Vice Chair
Nicole Ligon
Rick Glazier
Jon Powell
Erin Kenny
Mary Ann Matney
Tom Patrick
Miguel Hernandez
April Giancola

We look forward to hearing from those of you interested in serving with us!
Best regards,

Mary Ann Matney
