[Law24] Willem C. Vis Moot in International - Contracts and Arbitration 22-23 Team Tryouts

Campbell Law School will be competing in the Willem C. Vis Moot in International Commercial Contracts and Arbitration Competition this year. The Willem Vis moot is the largest private law moot court competition in the world, held annually in Hong Kong and Vienna.  Over 400 law schools from across the world participate in the Willem Vis moot. Campbell Law has participated in the Willem Vis moot since 2017 and achieved distinguishing results in 2019-2020 and 2020-2021, both for the written submissions (4th place worldwide in 2020 and 2021) and for the oral phase (elimination rounds in 2020).  Every year, the Willem Vis problem involves a contract between two commercial parties from different countries, governed by the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG), which contains an arbitration clause through which the parties agree to submit their disputes to arbitration, in lieu of litigation.

The competition includes two main phases:

  *   The written phase (October 7, 2022 - January 26, 2023): Involving the drafting of the Memorandum for the Claimant and the Memorandum for the Respondent.
  *   The oral phase (January 27, 2023 - April 6, 2023): Regional and amical oral rounds, culminating with the final rounds in Vienna (April 1-6, 2023).

The Campbell Law Advocacy Program will conduct tryouts for the Campbell Law Vis International Advocacy Team on Saturday, September 17, 2022 (9:00 am - 12:00 pm; 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm). Tryouts are open to all 2L and 3L students.  Registration is now open using the link and instructions below.

Interested advocates must:

  *   Complete the attached 22-23 Vis Advocacy Team Tryout Application and attach all corresponding documentation in a single PDF to be returned via email to tmterry at campbell.edu<mailto:tmterry at campbell.edu> and aporter at campbell.edu<mailto:aporter at campbell.edu>, no later than September 14, 2022, at 5:00 pm.
  *   Prepare a ten-minute oral argument based upon the attached Case Study - Fact Pattern 22-23. You will act as counsel for the Claimant during your tryout, meaning you will argue the Claimant's case, as outlined in the SOC, including responses to the Respondent's arguments, as outlined in the ASOC. In developing your legal arguments, you are not allowed to add any factual information or assume any facts which are not expressly stated in this Procedural Order No. 1 (except common knowledge). You may have with you any materials that you deem useful (including Procedural Order No. 1, the CISG, and the LCIA Rules).
