Newsome, Connie Shipman shipman at campbell.edu
Tue Nov 8 14:10:18 EST 2022

Dear 2L Students,

Welcome to spring 2023 semester registration (well...almost)! As a reminder, 2L registration opens on Tues (11/08/22) at 9:30PM EST. You can self-register (add/drop) through 5:00PM on 01/10/2023. We are passing along some reminders/updates and a list of courses that are already waitlisted or closed. If a class is waitlisted but not closed, you can add yourself to the waitlist(s), (assuming you meet eligibility / prerequisite requirements), but you’d be wise to have a back-up plan in place. Do take care and I wish you much success with registration.

Subject: Spring 2023 Registration Reminders
Importance: High

Dear Students,

Registration for Spring 2023 will open on Friday for 3L students and on Tuesday for 2L students, so PLEASE READ THIS MESSAGE VERY CAREFULLY AND IN ITS ENTIRETY!!!!! I will try to repeat ONLY the very pertinent information sent within the initial message below.

REGISTRATION:

  * Online registration for current 3L students will commence on Friday, November 04, at 2:00 p.m. EST.
     * 3L students who do not expect the transference of dual degree credits: If you intend to graduate in May 2023, you should have no more than 17 credit hours to complete at the close of the fall 2022 semester. Everyone, remember that all students must satisfy the RWE, Planning, and Jurisprudence Requirements, successfully complete all required courses, achieve a 90-credit hour minimum, and have earned a final CUM GPA of 75.000 for graduation. If there are concerns, email me.
  * Online registration for current 2L students will commence on Tuesday, November 08, at 9:30 p.m. EST.
  * FLEX Program students (including 1Ls), Ms. Jackson, Assistant Registrar, has already contacted you. We ask that you timely respond.
  * 1Ls, you will be automatically registered per your current sections before exams begin.
  * Everyone, when in Student Planning (https://ss.campbell.edu), you may see a button that suggests you request “Advisor Approval” for your schedule, in order to register. You do not need prior schedule approval to register, so disregard that message. This is required for undergraduate students only.
  * Please note from the initial email which courses are limited to current 3L students and which courses are required for completion during the 2L year.
  * When in Student Planning, the relevant registration term is 2023 Spring Law School or 23SPLW3 (term code).
  * If you cannot see the term in Student Planning, you may need to either refresh your browser or log out and back into Student Planning.
  *   NOTE:
     * LAW-672 is BANKRUPTCY REORGANIZATIONS SEMINAR.
     * LAW-935 – ENTREPRENEURSHIP CLINIC and INNOVATE CAPITAL BUSINESS LAW CLINIC are the same.

SOFTWARE “CLOCK”
Please note that the above references to “2:00 p.m.” or “9:30 p.m.” may be off by a very few minutes (early or late). This may arise for at least two reasons:

  1. We are not collectively synchronizing our watches / clocks (e.g., my watch may say 9:30 but your watch may say 9:29 or 9:33).
  2. I have set registration to open at the above stated times but I cannot control for a possible delay in internal system processes or messaging.

A special message from IT Services: “If you choose to pre-load your schedule by choosing your preferred sections and clicking the SUBMIT button when registration opens, you may get kicked out of Student Planning or you may NOT be able to register. REASON: While the system allows you to pre-load your schedule, it was never designed to allow nearly an entire class level of students to register at the same moment. Therefore, when registration opens at a specific time, all 3L students will not be able to register at that moment. Whether you are able to register depends, in part, on your internet speed and of course, Campbell has no way to control the issues you may have regarding your internet service.”

BURSAR’S OFFICE HOLDS ON YOUR ACCOUNT:
If there is a Bursar’s Office (BO) Hold on your account, you will not be able to register until the BO removes that hold. It will appear as a BO Hold on your Student Planning page. Should you need to contact them, please email or call: Email/Phone: bursarsoffice at campbell.edu<mailto:bursarsoffice at campbell.edu> or 800-334-4111 and press "6" on your phone's keypad. Reminder: the following codes do not prevent one from registration: EREF and LWPRA. EREF identifies one as being able to receive electronic refunds and LWPRA is relative to registration for previous semesters.

FAILING A FIRST-YEAR COURSE:
If you failed a 1L course in Fall 2021 or Spring 2022, you are required to retake it as soon as the course is next scheduled.

  * Any 2L or 3L students who requires enrollment into a 1L course will need to email the registrar’s office at lawregistrar at campbell.edu<mailto:lawregistrar at campbell.edu> to be registered.

NUMBER OF CREDITS:
As posted on our website: “In order to be enrolled as a full-time student, a student must register for at least ten credits and no more than 17 credits. Credits to be earned during a semester for the following are included in calculating compliance: externships, independent studies, law review service, and advocacy competitions (e.g., moot court, mock trial, and Old Kivett).”

If you are expecting Spring semester credit to be posted to your transcript for independent studies (various), Law Review service (Law Review faculty advisor), or Advocacy Competitions, please remember to subtract these credits from 17 to arrive at the number of remaining credits you can take. I’ve referenced the appropriate professor to consult, if you have questions.

We will be monitoring compliance with the 17-credit-cap very carefully, and we are capping registration at 17 credits. You will not be able to register for more than 17 credits. This restriction will help balance the distribution of available course offerings to all students throughout the registration process and prevent students from overloading their course schedule. Unnecessarily overloaded schedules cause havoc on the availability of needed classes for 2L students and inflates waitlists. Additionally, it creates an unpredictable course enrollment for faculty. This front-end restriction requires each student to be more committed to his/her course selection early on, preventing a massive shift in enrollment numbers during Drop/Add at the beginning of the term. Please note that the system may prevent you from registering for ANY credits if you try to register for more than 17 credits; therefore only select 17 or fewer credits during the registration process or your entire registration request may fail and you may need to start over.

Once you have selected the courses for which you wish to register (17 credits or less) and registration has officially opened, please submit your request only once. With the majority of students submitting requests at 9:30 p.m., there will be an inevitable delay as the system queues up the requests and starts processing them.

GENERAL ADVICE:
Please remember that not everyone will be able to successfully register for their ideal schedule or list of courses, and some courses may effectively be “closed” before we open registration to 2Ls. 3Ls and 2Ls, please give careful consideration to alternative / back-up plans.

If you have questions concerning which courses may be most beneficial for specific career paths, please consult your faculty advisor or another member of the faculty.

As stated below, for the mental health of us all, prayers up and fingers crossed for a successful registration. I certainly do not want to head into a birthday weekend with registration woes! 😊 Meanwhile, continue to focus on studies and finishing the fall 2022 semester strong. Do take care.

Live. Lift. Love! In word and in deed, let kindness be your guide.

Dr. C. S. Newsome

GENERAL COMMENTS
WAITLISTS:
IF YOU ARE WAITLISTED, during the weeks leading up to the Spring 2023 semester, someone from the Registrar’s Office will email you if and when a seat opens, according to your rank on the waitlist. If you are waitlisted, please stay tuned for emails, as we will need you to confirm your desire for a seat in the class within two business days.

Please do not register for a course until you have satisfied any listed REQUIRED course prerequisites.

The law school reserves the right to cancel a course for low enrollment (a number less than eight MIGHT be of concern). Students affected will be timely notified. You may wish to postpone purchasing any required materials until you confirm that a particular course will not be cancelled.

BOOKS:
Some rising or current 3Ls may recall the provision of book information on the schedules. I’ll pass along this excerpt, slightly edited from a previous email from someone at the university’s bookstore, which offers guidance on how to access book information for our courses:

“… You can research all of the classes that you may want to take on the official Campbell University Bookstore Website (http://campbell.bncollege.com) and follow the instruction …. [Click on Textbooks / Find Textbooks, and then Term / Spring 2022 Full Term.] For example, if you are researching book information for Dean Zinnecker’s class (Secured Transactions), you will need to key (LAW-711 LR01) under each drop down menu: "Course Name" (LAW); "Course Number" (711); and "Section Number" (LR01). All of this information can be located on any schedule that was sent out for [spring] classes….” We also invite you to contact individual professors if you have questions about book(s) for particular classes.

3L students who do not expect the transference of dual degree credits: If you intend to graduate in May 2023, you should have no more than 17 credit hours to complete as you head into spring 2023. December 2023 graduates, you should have no more than 34 credit hours remaining. Everyone, remember that all students must successfully satisfy the Planning and Jurisprudence Requirements, achieve a 90-credit hour minimum, and have earned a final CUM GPA of 75.000 for graduation. If there are concerns, email me.

Everyone, for the mental health of all of us, prayers up and fingers crossed for a successful registration. Take care.

Live. Lift. Love! In word and in deed, let kindness be your guide.

  *   3L Registration opens Friday, Nov. 4th @ 2:00PM

  *   2L Registration opens Tuesday, Nov. 8th @ 9:30PM

Please look for further correspondence from Dr. Newsome and me.
