[Law24] PLEASE READ! Instructions for Spring 2023 Externship Registration

Greeting Students!

It is hard to believe that the fall semester has come to an end. I hope you have time for some rest and relaxation over the next few weeks-YOU DESERVE IT!

If you plan to take a spring externship (receive academic credit for working at a legal placement), then please take notice of the following reminders. This information is also in the attached Externship Information Sheet

  1.  Eligible placements include 1) posting listed as an externship in Symplicity or 2) opportunities listed as internship that you would like to convert into an externship. To create your own externship, you must have an attorney supervisor and work in one of the following types of legal placement:
     *   government (local, state, or federal): judicial clerkships, town attorney, public defender or prosecutor, Office of the Governor Legal Dept., DOJ, etc.
     *   non-profit: Legal Aid of NC, Disability Rights NC,
     *   the legal department of a corporation (in-house): SAS, GSK, financial institutions, Toshiba, etc.
     *   law firm (so long as 100% of your work is on the firm's pro bono cases-not their regular book of business)
  2.  You cannot complete 2 of the same type of externships (i.e. work in 2 in-house positions, different divisions of NC Dept. of Justice, or multiple county district attorney offices). However, you can work at different levels (i.e. Court of Appeals and NC Supreme Court, Federal Court and State Court, Wake Public Defender and Wake District Attorney, Wake Public Defender and Federal Public Defender, Legal Aid and NC GOP)
  3.  You must register for LAW891: Externship I or LAW892: Externship II in self-service (as you do with any other class).
  4.  Once you register, email Dir. Niya Swint the attached (completed) Student Performance Agreement.

Right now, there are three externships still outstanding in Symplicity:
Campbell University Office of General Counsel (ID# 18053)
NC Court of Appeals-Judge Julee Flood (could potentially work with another newly elected COA judge but this post will go through Judge Flood) (ID# 18036)
Town of Garner (ID# 18010)
