Hello Dear Students,

I have attached below the most frequently asked questions I have received regarding tryouts.

  1. Q: Will tryouts be held all three days? I have prior commitments and cannot make all three days.
     * A: No. You need only sign-up for one tryout slot on either Saturday, Sunday, or Tuesday.
  2. Q: How much of a time commitment does the mock trial team require?
     * A: There is no concrete answer here beyond, success in any endeavor requires commitment and discipline. Mock trial practices are held after classes and on weekends to avoid interference with class schedules. Trial Advocacy team student advocates are student-athletes. Thus, academics come first. However, anything worth joining, particularly a Trial Advocacy team that is ranked 16th in the Nation, is worth working diligently to perform your best. Most trial advocacy team students develop supreme time management skills that prepare them for a career that requires the same.
  3. Does joining the mock trial team provide a diverse experience and individuals?
     * A: In interpreting this question, I’ll assume this question attempts to determine if the trial advocacy team is made up of diverse individuals. Yes, students from all walks of life and many different backgrounds are eligible to join the trial advocacy team and we pride ourselves on bringing students who make up different backgrounds together to make a cohesive team, one that naturally would provide a "diverse experience." Our program is one that is meritorious. Thus, no matter what, if a person has the best tryout, they will be given an opportunity to prove that they are worthy and capable of joining a select few as a member of the Campbell Law Trial Advocacy Team. Of personal note, Campbell Law happens to have produced the first African American to have won a Top Gun championship. I won that honor with Dean Tilly as my coach several years ago. While it is not necessarily ideal that it took a decade for the first African American individual to win such a prestigious honor, it is ideal that our law school was the first to do so. It speaks volumes about our program and how committed we are to giving students the best access to opportunities aside from anything else.
  4. Q: I am worried about the time commitment. Does making the mock trial team help with networking?
     * A: Our trial advocacy team’s first goal is to teach students who want to become trial lawyers how to represent clients at the highest level. Collateral rewards in striving toward that goal are often winning national championships and engaging in networking opportunities. As a member of our Campbell Law Trial Advocacy team, I received employment offers across the nation, and so did several of my classmates. As Director of the Competitive Advocacy program, I assist all our students with having access to employment opportunities, specifically our Campbell Law Trial Advocacy Team alumni network. Statistically, over 90% of trial advocacy student advocates pass the Uniform Bar Examination on their first attempt and over 70% of our students have employment offers before graduating from Campbell Law. These statistics and opportunities increase exponentially when you add the filming of a docu-series that is set to be published nationally. Hence, our intention in bringing the docu-series opportunity to you all. Being an attorney is about networking and our alumni network of former trial advocacy student advocates and supporters is large and influential.
  5. Q: Will tryouts happen again later during the school year?
     * A: No, tryouts will not be held during any other time this year due to our competitive advocacy schedule and the filming of the docu-series. Thus, if you are interested now, you should sign-up to tryout.
  6. Q: Are there other opportunities on the mock trial team if we don't opt to tryout?
     * A: No. Tryouts are the only way to be involved with the trial advocacy team.
In addition to receiving these questions, one of your classmates suggested we host an information session to address all outstanding questions. As I know many of you are still enjoying your summer break (as best as you can) that information session will be held via Zoom on August 9, 2022, at 7:00pm. You can access the Zoom via this link:

Rising 2L & 3L Students,

I email you today regarding two points of special note.

I am delighted to share with you all an opportunity that my classmates and I would have dreamed to have had the chance to participate in. The Campbell Law Competitive Trial Advocacy Team has been selected to be featured in a docu-series to highlight the stellar performance of the program over the past decade and our diligent competitive trial advocacy students for the upcoming academic year. The producers and camera crew will follow select students and trial advocacy teams throughout this academic year. Filming for this illustrious opportunity will begin with trial advocacy team tryouts. This docu-series will be published nationally. For reference purposes, the producers intend to mirror our docu-series after "Boys State" produced by AppleTV+, and/or "CHEER" produced by Netflix. Please feel free to find the official trailers for the aforementioned documentaries via Youtube if you would like to get a better idea of the overall production.

If you would like to be filmed in the documentary during your tryout, please email me and cc (Anjanette Porter) to let us know no later than August 10, 2022, at 2:00pm. If I do not receive an email from you, you will not be filmed for the documentary during your tryout. The consent to be filmed does not guarantee any student a position on the 2022-23 Trial Advocacy Team or placement in the docu-series. Similarly, choosing not to be filmed will not preclude any qualified student from being selected as a member of the 2022-23 Trial Advocacy Team. It is our sincerest hope that the opportunity to be featured in the first docu-series to highlight competitive trial advocacy will be groundbreaking for our university, and most importantly, for the students who will be featured and their future careers.

If you have any additional questions about this, please feel free to email me.

Finally, please allow this email to serve as a final reminder that trial advocacy team tryouts and applications must be selected/completed by August 10, 2022, at 2:00pm.

Please see the email below for complete information regarding tryouts.

Best,
Professor Terry

Subject: Campbell Law Trial Advocacy Team 2022-23 Tryouts

Rising 2L & 3L Students,

Campbell Law School will be competing in a host of mock trial competitions throughout the country this year. Last year, our teams competed in Colorado, Georgia, Texas, and Puerto Rico. This year, our mock trial team is slated to return to a completely in-person competitive season set to compete in Colorado, Florida, California, New York, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Texas, Washington D.C., and many other destinations. In our 2021-22 competitive advocacy season, our teams won two national championships, one national semifinalist placement, two regional championship finalist placements, and one regional semifinalist placement. Along the way, our advocates also won individual awards for their stellar courtroom advocacy. While we have enjoyed past success, we are anxious to identify the next group of outstanding trial advocates to continue our winning tradition.

Formal tryouts for the 22-23 Campbell Law Trial Advocacy Team are scheduled for Saturday, August 13th (9:00 am - 12:00 pm; 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm), Sunday, August 14th (1:30 pm – 4:30 pm), and Tuesday, August 16th (5:30 pm – 7:30 pm). Tryouts are open to all 2L and 3L students. Registration is now open using the link and instructions below.

Interested advocates must:
•     Complete the attached 22-23 Trial Advocacy Tryout Application and attach all corresponding documentation in a single PDF to be returned via email to tmterry at campbell.edu and aporter at campbell.edu, no later than August 10, 2022, at 2:00 pm.
•     Prepare a five-minute closing argument from the case NITA Liquor Commission v. Jones, et al. I have attached a copy of the case file for your convenience. You may choose to represent either side of the case. Both have equally strong arguments. Again, you sign-up to perform your prepared closing argument using the link above.

All students interested in participating in trial advocacy competitions must tryout irrespective of prior advocacy experience. Former participants are not guaranteed a position on the team nor an assignment to any particular competition.

We recognize that all of the 2L class, and many from the 3L class, have not had Trial Advocacy and most likely have no formal training in preparing or delivering a closing argument. Do not let this dissuade you from participating in tryouts. Other than being in your 2L or 3L year, there are no prerequisites for participating on the Campbell Law Trial Advocacy Team. In fact, most of the participants chosen in the past have had no experience whatsoever. We evaluate candidates based on several factors in determining who may be the most capable, dedicated advocates - so just focus on presenting your best five-minute closing argument.

We are interested in advocates who strongly desire to participate in courtroom trial competitions and are prepared to do the work necessary to be successful. Our team's success is a product of hard work and talent. Neither alone is sufficient. I am immensely proud of our past accomplishments; I’m equally excited about our future.

If you have any questions, please direct them to myself or Anjanette Porter (cc’d above). I hope you all are having a terrific summer, both personally and professionally, and I look forward to seeing you all in a few weeks.

Kindly,

Professor Terry
