[Law24] Kilpatrick Mock Trial Competition Information

Good Morning, 1L Class,

I am writing to provide your class with information regarding the 1L Kilpatrick Mock Trial Competition taking place February 4-6, 2022. Below is some general information, but please feel free to email Director Terry or me, or stop by either of our offices, if you have any additional questions.

The 1L Kilpatrick Competition is an intramural competition that takes place every year at UNC School of Law. The purpose of this competition is to introduce all of you to trial advocacy. This competition does not require any prior experience, and the vast majority of competitors have never been in a situation even remotely similar to this one. You will not be at any disadvantage if you have never given an opening statement, a closing argument, or cross examined a witness; this is a learning experience. That being said, you will get out of this experience what you put into it. If you take the time to carefully read the case file, practice with your teammates, and prepare to the best of your ability, I know that you will find this to have been a valuable expenditure of your time.

The case file is typically released to us sometime in mid-December. If we receive the case file prior to the last day of finals, we will not release the file to you until the day after the last final exam is scheduled. The file will contain basic objections and courtroom procedure, so read it carefully for those details. This information will help you with learning the general procedure of a trial.

We will post a sign-up sheet at the entrance of the Advocacy Suite on the 3rd floor of the law school in the next few weeks. You should sign up in teams of four students.

Again, I am happy to answer any questions you have about the competition prior to sign-ups. Hopefully this email covered some of the general concerns, but if anything else arises, please let me know.
