<p class="MsoNormal" style="background:white"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif;color:black">The 1L Kilpatrick Competition is an intramural competition that takes place every year at UNC School of Law. The purpose of this competition
is to introduce all of you to trial advocacy. This competition does not require any prior experience, and the vast majority of competitors have never been in a situation even remotely similar to this one. You will not be at any disadvantage if you have never
given an opening statement, a closing argument, or cross examined a witness; this is a learning experience. That being said, you will get out of this experience what you put into it. If you take the time to carefully read the case file, practice with your
teammates, and prepare to the best of your ability, I know that you will find this to have been a valuable expenditure of your time.</span><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif;color:#222222"><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="background:white"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif;color:black">The case file is typically released to us sometime in mid-December. If we receive the case file prior to the last day of finals, we
will not release the file to you until the day after the last final exam is scheduled. The file will contain basic objections and courtroom procedure, so read it carefully for those details. This information will help you with learning the general procedure
of a trial.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
