Hello all,
I hope you've been having a restful block break. The Bradford pears and forsythia are in bloom and the pine trees are about to drop metric tons of pollen, so you know what time it is... Block 4/Neuro time! If you're already bored of your friends and family and looking for a way to get ahead of the curve this spring, you can start by making sure you're optimally prepared to begin Neuroscience! For your convenience I've cobbled together a review PowerPoint document (see attached) of information you've already been taught in Blocks 1-3 that is pertinent to the Neuroscience course. Spend a little time refamiliarizing yourself with this material before we start as it lays the foundations for what is to come.
Give special attention to neurophysiology, ANS receptors, and neurotransmitters as they establish some fundamental language for discussing the nervous system (e.g. excitatory/inhibitory post-synaptic potentials) and lay the foundations for your neuropharmacology lectures (about 15% of the course is pharm). Also spend time on clinical dermatomes, and reflex and strength testing locations as the central theme and organizing principle of this course is the neurologic exam! I look forward to working with you.
Best wishes,
-Dr. Toler
