Good morning, Class of 2028,
Remember, it is a great time to start planning for the summer. We encourage you to meet with your faculty advisor and discuss your plans for getting involved in student organizations, leadership roles, service, and/or research. It's a great thing to get involved-but be careful not to overextend yourself! Better to commit to a few things for which you are passionate and enjoy! This will allow yourself to make meaningful contributions while maintaining your health, wellness, and good academic progress. Also, please see answers to some of the questions submitted during the Block 3 presentation (see below).
If you missed it or would like to review the "Tips for Block 3 and Upcoming/Summer Opportunities", see the recording link: Block 3 Tips & Upcoming Opportunities<https://campbelluniversity.hosted.panopto.com/Panopto/Pages/Viewer.aspx?id=b3d25584-7397-4a1f-a1e7-b2660117b24b> (see responses to questions submitted by students below) or Heal Thyself: Maintaining Health & Nutrition<https://campbelluniversity.hosted.panopto.com/Panopto/Pages/Viewer.aspx?id=ca746e78-88f6-4d2b-a18f-b27901175a95> by Drs. Block 3 Questions
1. Does the CUCCC continue over the summer? Yes, please reach out to Kristin Johnson or one of your CUCCC student board members for more information.
2. It's my last free summer, can't I take the summer off? Yes, this is a personal choice-and sometimes, taking time off is the best thing you can do for yourself and your family. Think about what is most needed at this point in your life.
3. How do I find research opportunities outside of the school? Remember, you always need to have a faculty mentor for any research you do-and submit a "Research Notification Form" before presenting or publishing your research/scholarly work.
* Peruse the CUSOM Research Blackboard Organization for opportunities-there is a compiled list.
* Consider reaching out to your undergraduate institution/former employer and reconnecting with research mentors with whom who already have an established relationship.
* Where is home? Try looking for opportunities where you live or where you are from
* Check the websites of student and/or professional organizations you are a member and check out what opportunities may be available.
* Use your network-ask and let people know you are looking for these opportunities...you never know where your connections will lead you!
* Tip: Have an updated CV prepared when reaching out to potential mentors and do your homework-familiarize yourself with their research by reading recent papers so you can ask thoughtful questions.
4. Asking for letters of recommendation for research opportunities
* Consider first the opportunity to which you are applying-what are they looking for in terms of experience and skills? Are there any specific requirements regarding who should write the letter? Then, ask yourself who meets those criteria and who can best speak about those skills and experience they are seeking? The longer and more meaningful interactions you have had with a letter writer, the more personal and likely stronger letter they can write. However, never let this stop you from applying-if you need, for example, a current faculty member who has only known you for a few months, that's okay. Just ask-and provide that person with an updated CV. Tip: I recommend having a short meeting with your letter writers to explain the opportunity and give them some insights into you and why you are well suited for the opportunity-this will help them write a stronger letter.
* And remember, we all had to do this at various stages of our own careers-don't feel guilty about asking-just pay it forward with the next generation when you can do the same for someone else.
5. How to start research?
* Take a first step. Talk to a mentor to get some ideas.
* If you are new to research, try joining a project that is already in the works.
* Consider applying to the CUSOM Medical Summer Scholars Program (to be announced in the coming weeks) and/or participate in the CAP Projects (to be announced later this spring). These are two great opportunities especially if you are newer to research.
6. Specific counseling in medical specialties?
* Our clinical chairs are GREAT resources to give your specific guidance into various specialties. If you are interested in a particular field, seek out individuals working in that specialty and ask lots of questions.
* This AAMC website has a list of specialties and basic information about each: https://careersinmedicine.aamc.org/explore-options/specialty-profiles and another section on "Choose Your Specialty" with various resources to help you reflect and consider your options: https://careersinmedicine.aamc.org/choose-your-specialty/consider-information.
7. Clinical opportunities over the summer?
* Again, use your network of past and current mentors/faculty - and see if you may be able to shadow or volunteer. Does their institution or hospital have internship programs?
* Apply to local, state, and federal summer clinical internship programs-look again at student and professional organizations and see what opportunities may be available in your areas of interest.
* Consider volunteering at local hospitals or getting involved with a free clinic or community health center where you are living.
