Greetings, Class of 2028!
Just a reminder about upcoming CUSOM ACE Student Study Hour and Anatomy LAB Drop-in Sessions this week (see schedule below)! Do you use Anki? If so, make sure you are using it appropriately. It can be a great way to build in spaced repetition and active recall-but only if you are using it correctly.
Common Improper Use of Anki: (Using Anki and not seeing the results you want? Or, not having enough time to get through content? See if you may be doing any of the following below...and try readjusting)
· The memorization of isolated facts rather than understanding the concept and how things are connected to one another-memorizing tons of information but not "zooming out" to see how each of those details/facts fit into the BIG PICTURE.
o How to avoid this?
§ Start with big concepts first when first breaking down a lecture. Build your "framework" and make sure you have the "foundational concepts" before using a flashcard system with details. You want to be able to have a filing system for those details.
§ When using your flashcards, answer the question. But then, ask yourself-where does this fit into the larger clinical picture? If you were to do a concept map, how far can you take that knowledge from that one card? (Remember, Zoom in, Zoom out...repeat)
· Over-reliance on pre-made decks can save time-but they can be dangerous if you are using them as an early study tool! If you did not make the deck, then, these should be only used as a "surrogate" for testing whether you know the information-like a study partner. The issue if you use them too early-you are relying more on rote memorization without any conceptual understanding of the content.
o How to avoid this?
§ Ideally, create your own cards-after you have already mastered big concepts and being SELECTIVE in how many cards you create.
§ If you are going to use a pre-made deck, do NOT use it to learn the material. Use it only to test whether you know the material...but use caution. Remember, this was not created by you or your professor...so make sure that you are mastering content from class.
· TOO MANY CARDS-takes too much time and can be very overwhelming and stressful...everything starts to pile up and feel disorganized if there are too many cards.
o How to avoid this?
§ Focus on learning key concepts first without making cards. EXPLAIN big concepts out loud using your own words. How much content can you master just using your lecture slides as your study tool? The more you can do this, the less time you take creating the study tool-and the more time you have to go over content multiple times.
§ BE CHOOSY-only use cards for things that you need them for-for example, identification of anatomical structures will require a lot more repetition so a tool like Anki can be very helpful. You may have fewer cards for a course like physiology in which you really need to understand the material.
· Passive review of cards-this is reading over the cards but not really asking yourself to try to recall and explain the card.
o How to avoid this?
§ Look away from the card and make yourself explain the information using words that are not identical to the answer on the card.
§ If you are struggling with "active" recall in your head, then make yourself talk out loud. You will easily identify where your understanding stops.
