Subject: Info. on Optional Kaplan Simulated Exam
If you took the optional, full-length, proctored Kaplan exam today, (also huge thanks to the MedEd team for going above and beyond)
Here is a bit of information to help you navigate some things.
1. Make sure to review your summary of “Answer Changes” (e.g., how many changes from incorrect --> correct or correct --> incorrect). What does this tell you? Is there anything you should change moving forward?
2. Review your “CATEGORIES” results which will give you overall performance broken down based on 1) COMLEX Clinical Presentation, 2) COMLEX Competency Domains, and 3) COMLEX Disciplines
* Where have you made progress?
* Where are your weaker areas that you should focus your prep?
1. How do I interpret my Kaplan exam score?
* As with any practice, mock exam, it gives you some idea of predicting readiness, but no company or even the COMSAE through the NBOME can guarantee “predictability of passing”. With that in mind, Kaplan has done some data analysis on six participating institutions, 399 students, using their full-length, simulated, secured exam (hence, the reason you cannot view the individual questions). Please find the attached information Kaplan has provided on interpreting scores on their Level 1 simulated exam.
Things to keep in mind when interpreting scores from practice exams…
* The more similar to actual exam conditions, the more predictive that exam is likely to be.
* Is it timed? Is it a full-length exam? Is it proctored? Simulating break times to be the same? Is it a secure exam (meaning you cannot view the questions & answers)?
* For example, taking 50 questions on tutor mode, untimed mode is not going to be very predictive—however, it still may have value as board prep when you are trying to reinforce and test your knowledge on a concept that you have focused on recently.
* Practice exams from different sources will differ, and therefore, the interpretation of scores may also differ (so, you cannot always do direct % or numerical score side-by-side comparisons). However, reviewing what they tell you about how to interpret their scores is helpful—and certainly the breakdown performance on clinical presentations and disciplines is super helpful.
Hope that helps!
