Class of 2027,
As you start clinical rotations next week, there are a few things I wanted to remind you about. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time. Good luck this year!
1. CHECK YOUR EMAIL DAILY! Please remember how important this is. Not reading your email is not an excuse for a missed deadline or a lack of response to Clinical Affairs and/or your site coordinator.
2. BE ON TIME! Please make sure to arrive on time and ready to rotate with your preceptor! If they say be here at 7am, be there and be ready to rotate, not walking in the door at 7am. Tardiness and not following the absence policy can cause you to fail a clinical rotation, so please be mindful of this.
3. Rotation Hours: The average amount of time spent on a 4-week rotation should be around 160 hours. This will vary by rotation. You are expected to work the shifts you are assigned. This can include, but is not limited to: an overnight shift, a 24-hour call shift, nights, and/or weekends. This also means if your preceptor's office is closed on Fridays, you are not expected to work that day.
1. Case Logs: You are required to complete at least 10 case logs for all of your rotations. You do this by using the Logger tab in New Innovations. Case Logs are due by 11:59pm on the Thursday before your rotation ends.

1. Modules: You will have modules to complete on the following rotations: Family Medicine, Medicine I, Medicine II, OBGYN, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Surgery. You will receive information about these modules the Friday before your rotation starts. Additionally, all information can be found in the syllabus for each rotation. Syllabi are posted to New Innovations. Failure to complete your modules by 11:59pm on the Thursday before the rotation ends will result in five (5) points being deducted from your COMAT score, per day, the modules are not completed. Exceptions will not be made, so please make sure all modules and any required quizzes or attestations are completed by the deadline.

1. TrueLearn Questions: You are required to complete 150 TrueLearn questions, for each clinical rotation. These should be relevant to the assigned rotation and completed while on that rotation. If you exhaust all questions relevant to your rotation, you can complete the remaining number in a topic of your choice. All 150 questions are due by 11:59pm on the Thursday before the rotation ends.

1. Call Back Fridays / COMATs: The following rotations have a COMAT: Family Medicine, Medicine II, OBGYN, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Surgery. You will be expected to return to CUSOM for your COMAT and have afternoon Call Back Friday activities and prep sessions to complete. You can be expected to be here until 5pm on Call Back Friday, so please do not make plans that require you to leave early. All COMATs and Call Back Friday activities will be held in person. COMATs cannot be taken remotely (per the NBOME), so in-person attendance is required.
If you are not on one of the rotations listed above, you are not required to come to CUSOM on Call Back Friday. You are, however, required to go to your rotation.
6.4.3.6 Callback Fridays - Page 205-206 (these pages may change when the 2025-26 Academic Bulletin is published)
1. Absences: You have three (3) discretionary days and five (5) sick days to use during your 3rd year of rotations. Only one discretionary day can be used in a single block. All absences must be reported to the Office of Clinical Affairs and you must receive approval for your request. If you must miss more than one sick day in block, a doctor's note will be required. Should you test positive for COVID, Flu, Strep, etc. or something that prevents you from being on rotations, per your Clinical Campus, please complete the Wufoo form, with your positive test results, so Clinical Affairs can arrange alternate rotation curriculum.
The absence request Wufoo form is required, for all absences, and can be found below and on the home page of New Innovations. Failure to report an absence, can result in a failure of a rotation. Please also be reminded it is not your preceptor's responsibility to be aware of our attendance policy. If you ask your preceptor to miss a week and they say yes, you will still fail the rotation because you have missed more time than you can miss on a rotation.

6.4.3.4 Clinical Rotation Attendance - Pages 201-207 (these pages may change when the 2025-26 Academic Bulletin is published)
In addition to rotation attendance, your attendance to Didactics is required. If you need to miss didactics, for any reason, you should notify your site coordinator and submit an absence request for your time missed.
1. Evaluation of your Preceptor and the Rotation: Seven (7) days before the rotation ends, you will receive an evaluation to complete for your preceptor(s) and your rotation. These are mandatory. Your preceptor does not see these, so please make sure to share any issues or concerns you have of your preceptor and/or the rotation. The evaluation your preceptor completes of your performance, will not be available for your review until you have completed your evaluations of the preceptor(s) and rotation.
2. CastleBranch: Items such as your TB, Health Insurance and Flu shot are required annually. Please make sure to keep your CastleBranch account current. All of these items will be housed under the account you created at matriculation. If you do not have a space to upload your TB renewal yet, please be on the lookout for when your requirement populates.
You should all receive your updated BLS/ACLS cards soon. Please upload your BLS card to the requirement in CastleBranch, as soon as possible.
Failure to keep your account current may result in a referral to APPS or being pulled from a clinical rotation.
1. COMAT Blueprints: Each COMAT will consist of 120 items that must be completed within 2 hours and 30 minutes, unless you have testing accommodations. The NBOME website has a COMAT blueprint for all exams. This may be helpful during your COMAT prep. The COMAT blueprints can be located here -- https://www.nbome.org/assessments/comat/clinical-subjects/
2. Please be reminded you may be expected to drive up to 60 miles away from the premiere education partner of your clinical campus. If your clinical campus has multiple hospitals (i.e. Region 3a - Raleigh), and you are not sure which location it is, please let me know. If you must be displaced, due to rotation capacity, further than 60 miles away, CUSOM will provide housing through the AHEC system.
