Subject: Exciting Research Opportunities for CUSOM Students
Hello Student Doctors!
I hope this email finds you well. Dr. Elizabeth Butcher recently reached out to me with three intriguing project ideas that could be of great interest to you and your fellow students. These projects are flexible and can be tailored to suit individual interests and needs. Dr. Butcher is also available to meet with anyone interested in developing one of these projects or creating a new one. She is the program director of Internal Medicine at Harnett Health and can be contacted at: EButcher at capefearvalley.com<mailto:EButcher at capefearvalley.com>
Here are the project details for 3x of the QI projects:
1. STUDENT NOTES
* Current Situation: Third and fourth-year CUSOM student notes are "shadow" notes and do not enter the official EMR record, thus not supporting billing.
* Project Idea: Conduct a QI project to change student notes to be part of the official record. This would involve surveying current students about their experience with shadow notes and then re-surveying after the change.
* Hypothesis: Students whose notes are part of the official record receive more feedback and feel more integral to patient care.
* Student Involvement: Surveys, literature review, data analysis, writing findings, and poster presentations.
1. OMM (Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine)
* Current Situation: Feedback indicates students would like to perform gentle/low-velocity maneuvers on inpatients.
* Project Idea: Develop a protocol for OMM on inpatients with hospital approval, including patient consent, attending supervision, and possibly DO resident supervision.
* Hypothesis: OMM would benefit inpatient care and enhance students' sense of contribution to patient well-being.
* Student Involvement: Collecting pre- and post-patient survey data, understanding OMM benefits, and contributing to protocol development.
1. BLOOD PRESSURE ASSESSMENT IN THE CLINIC
* Current Situation: Proper BP assessment techniques are often not used, and repeated measurements are not consistently taken.
* Project Idea: Implement a workflow for repeating high BP measurements to improve accuracy and patient care.
* Hypothesis: Repeating BP measurements will provide more accurate readings, decrease over-medication, and improve quality metrics.
* Student Involvement: Repeating high BP measurements, data collection, interaction with residents/attendings, and patient education.
Additional Information:
* Any CUSOM student wishing to engage in research must be "onboarded" and granted read-only EPIC privileges. This process is straightforward and supported by our GME team.
* QI work is exempt from IRB approval, simplifying the project process.
If you are interested in any of these projects or have an idea of your own, please let me know. Dr. Butcher is eager to support and guide students through these research opportunities.
Cheers,
