Dear future D.O.s,

The Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) would like to announce an exciting opportunity to publish student research and scholarly work in The Future D.O., the national osteopathic student magazine! The magazine is a biannual publication that aims to feature research abstracts and opinion pieces by current osteopathic medical students nationwide as well as to showcase and promote their ongoing scientific and research achievements. The magazine also offers spotlights including but not limited to policy, political affairs, wellness, and professional development. Its vision is to support the scholarly endeavors of future osteopathic physicians and provide a platform that captures and highlights their contributions to human health. For reference, the first issue of our magazine can be found here: https://www.studentdoresearch.org/thefuturedo.

What Do We Look For:

1. Abstract Submissions: All osteopathic medical students (SOMA and Non-SOMA members) are welcome to submit abstracts of their past/current research projects, including but not limited to case studies, clinical science research, basic science research, literature reviews, scoping reviews, and meta-analyses. To be eligible for publication, students must be the primary or secondary author of their submitted abstract. The format of the abstract should include an introduction, methods, results, and discussion/conclusions. Abstracts have a word limit of 250 words.

a. Please note: The SOMA magazine is technically not a research journal. Students are allowed to submit abstracts that have already been published. If there is an abstract not published in a peer-reviewed journal yet, submitting it to the SOMA magazine will not limit you from submitting it to that journal in the future.

2. Opinion Pieces Submissions: All osteopathic medical students who are SOMA members are welcome to submit letters to the editor (LTEs) and “perspectives” articles (i.e., op-eds). All opinion piece submissions, including letters, MUST be exclusive to the SOMA Magazine. Please follow the link to the submission guidelines in the submissions form for more information.

3. Creative Poetry Piece Submissions: The Future D.O. Editorial Board is accepting a creative piece of poetry. Special consideration will be given to work that best captures this edition’s theme, the corporatization of healthcare. Please see the guidelines for more on the theme. Students can only upload one submission. Poems should not exceed 100 lines.

4. Artwork Submissions: Are you creative and looking for a place to display your work? The SOMA magazine is looking for student artwork to showcase in the magazine and would like to invite you to share your pieces for a chance to be featured in the next SOMA issue! We ask that you submit an image of your artwork, scaled to a width of 8.5” (such as 11 x 8.5” or 8.5 x 8.5”) in a high or original quality. Please submit only files ending in .jpeg, .jpg, .tiff, or .png format to somamagazine at studentdo.com<mailto:somamagazine at studentdo.com>. We look forward to viewing your pieces!

What Do We Not Publish?

The SOMA magazine does not accept attacks on organizations/individuals or long editorial pieces (800+ words).
