CPHS Students,

As part of our Black History Month celebration, CPHS Student Affairs is highlighting remarkable Black professionals who have made significant contributions to the healthcare field. Today, we recognize Dr. David Satcher, a pioneer in the Public Health industry, whose impact continues to shape the profession.

📌 About Dr. David Satcher:

Dr. David Satcher was a renowned medical doctor and public health administrator who overcame significant challenges to achieve success. Growing up with limited access to healthcare, he became determined from a young age to pursue a career in medicine. As class valedictorian of his racially segregated high school, he went on to achieve higher education and became the first African American to earn both an M.D. and a Ph.D. Satcher held several prominent administrative positions, including serving as president of the Morehouse School of Medicine, the first medical college for African Americans in the South. He was later appointed director of the CDC and Surgeon General, where he focused on eliminating health disparities, promoting health equity, and preventing disease. Notably, his efforts contributed to significant improvements in childhood immunization rates.
