CPHS Students,
As part of our Black History Month celebration, CPHS Student Affairs is highlighting remarkable Black professionals who have made significant contributions to the healthcare field. Today, we recognize Dr. Mary Munson Runge, a pioneer in the Pharmacy industry, whose impact continues to shape the profession.
📌 About Dr. Mary Munson Runge:
Dr. Mary Munson Runge (1928–2014) was a trailblazer in the pharmacy profession, breaking barriers as both the first woman and first African American president of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) in 1979. Inspired by her father, the first pharmacist in Donaldsonville, Louisiana, she dedicated her career to serving underserved communities. After graduating from Xavier University of Louisiana in 1948, Runge worked in hospital and community pharmacy, advocating for access to medication for low-income African Americans. As APhA president, she championed diversity and inclusion, establishing initiatives to support women in pharmacy. Her lasting impact includes federal service, mentorship, and a scholarship in her name, ensuring future generations continue her legacy of equity in healthcare.
