CPHS Students,

As part of our Black History Month celebration, CPHS Student Affairs is highlighting remarkable Black professionals who have made significant contributions to the healthcare field. Today, we recognize Dr. Lynda Woodruff, a pioneer in the Physical Therapy industry, whose impact continues to shape the profession.

📌 About Dr. Lynda Woodruff:

Lynda Woodruff, PT, PhD, was a trailblazing educator and advocate in the physical therapy profession. She became the first African American faculty member in the Division of Physical Therapy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1974 before joining Georgia State University, where she earned her PhD and led efforts in minority student recruitment and retention. She later became the founding director of North Georgia College’s physical therapy department, establishing the state’s first postbaccalaureate PT program. Woodruff played a key role in creating APTA’s Advisory Council on Minority Affairs and the Minority Scholarship Fund. Her contributions earned numerous accolades, including APTA’s Lucy Blair Service Award and a gubernatorial appointment to the Georgia State Board of Physical Therapy. At just 13, she was also one of the first African American students to desegregate EC Glass High School in Virginia. Woodruff passed away in 2018, leaving a profound impact on education, advocacy, and the advancement of physical therapy.
