Class of 2024,

We are quickly approaching the end of the Fall semester and the end of year 1 of PT school. You have all been working hard to learn new content and grow your knowledge in a wide range of topic areas. Keep it up. You are very close to a long break for the holidays followed by the opportunity to spend 6 weeks with patients.

This portion of the first year can be very stressful and question often arise about academic standing and progression to clinical rotations. The vast majority of concern about these issues is unwarranted historically. It may be helpful to better understand academic standing as you prepare for the rapid finish of this semester.

The Academic Bulletin (see link below) contains all policies and procedures for the college (DPT academic standards start on page 91). But the highlights I have listed here.

  * Students need to be in Good Academic Standing without Professional or Honor Code violations to progress to clinical rotations.
  * Good Academic Standing is met if all the following are true: 1) Cumulative GPA ≥ 2.8; 2) Successful completion of all required remediation - if applicable; 3) not on probation
  * Academic Probation is earned by any of the following: 1) failure to reach minimum cumulative GPA; 2) A grade of D in a single course; 3) failure to complete any degree requirement within the prescribed time without prior approval; 4) failure to complete required remediation in required timeframe or on first attempt.

If you have any concerns about this process or your academic standing, please reach out to me. A conversation can help alleviate a lot of stress from the unknown. The intent of this email is not to increase your stress but to make sure you have the information.
