The World Football / Soccer Rankings are based on a formula that takes into
consideration the results of past matches. These are then weighted
according to importance, with a World Cup match worth four times as much as
a friendly. The rankings are based on a 12 month average, and a team gets
three points for winning a game, zero points for losing, and zero points
for a draw. Points are also awarded to teams that win a penalty shootout.

The game of soccer has roots in ancient China, Greece, and Rome. While the
modern game was born in England around 1860, its earliest known form is
dated back to the second century B.C., and was adapted by the Japanese five
centuries later. Today, nearly every country has its own soccer team,
though not all of them are members of FIFA or qualified to compete in the
World Cup.

Historically, the top-ranked team was Germany. The team had qualified for
three FIFA World Cups and had won one. But Brazil took the lead in the
run-up to the 1994 World Cup after winning eight out of nine matches in
qualifying. During that World Cup qualifying, Brazil scored twenty goals
but conceded only four. Italy briefly climbed to the top spot, but Germany
quickly reclaimed the top spot.

As the most popular sport in the world, Brazil is well-represented in the
World Football / Soccer Rankings. The country has more than two million
footballers. Argentina is the only other country with over two thousand
players. The rankings are a reflection of the best soccer teams in the
world.

Historically, San Marino has had the lowest FIFA World Ranking. Its average
FIFA ranking position has been 176th since 1992. The most popular football
club in the world right now is Real Madrid. The second most popular is
Barcelona. It is difficult to argue against the two top clubs in the world.

World Football / Soccer Rankings are updated monthly on FIFA's website.
Each nation's standings are published on the first or second Thursday of
each month. As of September 2009, the Socceroos were ranked ninth in the
FIFA rankings. Until then, however, Australia's ranking had a mixed
history. Despite this, the Socceroos have never been out of the top twenty.

A team's FIFA World Cup qualification depends on how well they play. A team
can improve their ranking by completing a game against a team that has a
similar ranking. In a knockout round, the team must win two matches before
it can advance to the next round. In the World Cup, the winner of each
group advances to the next round.
