To our prospective resident,

Thank you for your interest in the Columbia VA Health Care System (CVAHCS) Orthopedic PT Residency program.

The mission of the CVAHCS residency program is to train qualified Doctors of Physical Therapy (DPT) in advanced orthopedic specialty practice employing the mentorship of experienced clinicians, incorporating evidence-informed practice in providing quality care and improved patient outcomes. The program delivers orthopedic clinical experiences, mentoring, and didactic education to advance the level of orthopedic physical therapy practitioners who exercise fiscal responsibility, evidence-informed practice dedicated to meeting the long-term health, wellness and specialized needs of our Veterans.

It is an exciting time for us as a profession as we move towards specialized practice as a recognized movement specialist. The congruent applications of theory and practice in a novice Physical Therapist after the entry level (DPT) degree is often undistinguishable and met with abstruse thought processes through trial and error thus continued mentorship and formal guidance is imperative. This will allow the clinician to grow on track to the formative years of learning. Mentorship also has shown to play a crucial role in academic success, professional growth, and development. This program aims to provide you with a deeper understanding of the sciences we learned in entry-level education by linking and applying them into advance practice in order to deduce the scope and depth of knowledge into the whole patient in both biomechanical and biopsychosocial domains.

The following program highlights set our residency program apart from others:

  * Interdisciplinary exposure (Primary and Emergency Care PT, Pain Clinic)
  * Academic Teaching-Experience with University of South Carolina- DPT Program
  *   Pediatric Orthopedic Mentorship Hours
  * Journal Club and State/National Case Presentations
  *   Staff In-service Presentations
  *   Mentoring DPT Students
  *   Surgical and Procedural Observations
  *   Hand Clinic Observations
  * One on one mentoring by highly dedicated, experienced mentors (5 OCS mentors, 2 FAAOMPT mentors)
  * Prosthetic and Orthotic Services Collaboration
  *   Pain Programs in Rehabilitation
  * Outstanding Facility Award in Clinical Education (2015) - Carolina Consortium
  *   11 Federal Holidays

The residency begins in July 1 of each year and runs for 12 consecutive months.

The expected outcome of the program is an advanced-practice clinician with knowledge and clinical reasoning skills advantageous for improved care, with optimum outcomes for individuals having neuromusculoskeletal dysfunctions and movement impairments that result in activity or participation restrictions. The curriculum of this residency is also designed to prepare physical therapists for the Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Specialty Certification Examination.

While RF-PTCAS is still not available, all applications are to be sent via email. Application runs from February1 to March 31, 2022.

Address your application to the Residency Director at ulysses.juntilla at va.gov<mailto:ulysses.juntilla at va.gov>

Attached are the program brochure and flyer for further details on application submission.

Best Regards,

UL
