First, I want to say that you all had a special treat with the group of professionals that Dr. Eubanks put together yesterday. If you were not inspired after that talk, nothing will inspire you! What I love is that each one of them went to PT school (mostly the same one...) but all developed their own unique way to fulfill their vision of the PT career they envisioned! PT school is a foundation and a step toward greater things.

Additionally, I noticed how none of them got to where they are without extra thought, without adding their own perspective and opinion to the profession. Not to be cliche- but, literally, the world is yours! That group truly showed that it was possible.

So, it got me thinking that maybe now would actually be a great time to introduce you to the required project for the fall, as it requires you to identify your own interest and project. Perhaps something yesterday inspired you or piqued your curiosity. While that is still fresh, I want give you the guidelines of the individual project you will completed for DPT 782 in the fall.

It is worth 20% of your overall grade and the syllabus describes it as:

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is for each student to demonstrate advanced application of curriculum information through synthesis of an interest, evidence and an opinion or solution. This project should cumulate into a product that would change PT practice if written into an opinion paper, presented at a conference, used as an in-service or developed into a handbook for intervention. It is NOT a report on a technique or review of literature on a diagnosis. It MUST be approved PRIOR to beginning to ensure it meets the requirement for the project. This is an individual, not group project.

Whoa! What does that mean? It means you are free to identify ANYTHING (not necessarily neuro related... ANYTHING) that interests you in the field- but it is NOT a research paper, it is a project that cumulates in a final product that could be shared with stakeholders (patients, peers, MD's, students, CI's, professionals in PT, faculty....) in any format (blog, podcast, paper (formatted for submission to a chosen location- like PT MAgazine), etc.

Some examples from the past:

  1. PT Magazine submission (not accepted, but tried) on "Bringing PT Outdoors" and the need for moving outside of the walls of the rehab environment- for full participation (like the PT you met yesterday!)
  2. Podcast between me and dr. noonan on the different way we use the principles of motor learning and motor control in adults versus children and the difference in neuroplasticity
  3. Podcast for women's health that got published on the APTA Pelvic Health Section site
  4. Educational Video https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DA8We6WU7bWNF7ixXVzO0CvTk3gbx6Fx/view?usp=sharing
  5. Persuasive essay on inclusion of service for licensure requirement
  6. Submission to the student-led APTA blog The Pulse
  7. Session with Jimmy McKay on Pintcast

I wanted to tell you now as it will take some time ot think of. Perhaps when you are on break, the answer will come to you.
Feel free to reach out to me if you have ideas to know if they fit the criteria. This is the antithesis of the DPT Terminal Project Dr. Myers will talk to you about. This is professional development/ consumer level (not strict research).

Happy Friday!
