[PT2021] Third Annual Falls Prevention Challenge 2020

Hi all,
The following Fall Prevention Challenge is a phenomenal way to share with others the impact of falls on older adults AND to put Campbell DPT program on the map. All that's required is a 3 minute video directed at a member of our community: medical, political, lay person, to alert them in a creative way, how to prevent falls. So many of you are creative and passionate about the health and well-being of older adults and now would be a great time to show that.

Hoping to see great Campbell representation for this challenge. Go DPT Camels!!

Dr. Constantine

Subject: Third Annual Falls Prevention Challenge 2020

Hi folks,
I know that you are working in crazy times, but people continue to fall regardless of the virus. Probably the risk for falling among many older adults has significantly increased due to social isolation that can result in depression, anxiety, and limited activities. All three huge factors that increase individual falls risk.

As the Silver Tsunami is less than half way finished, then add on the COVID 19 pandemic, fall risks and prevention become an even more significant issue for physical therapist and physical therapist assistants to address in multiple populations. The APTA NC Falls Prevention Special Interest Group has developed the 3rd Annual Falls Prevention Challenge this year that will not require contact with anyone and can be done with just the current students in your program. Hopefully, this challenge will be an opportunity for your students to learn about the multifactorial elements of falls, by recognizing that APTA has 3 different academies, Neurology, Geriatrics and Oncology, that have Falls Prevention Special Interest Groups to address this significant issue with great resources on their web pages.
https://www.neuropt.org/special-interest-groups/balance-falls
https://geriatricspt.org/special-interest-groups/balance-falls/
https://oncologypt.org/sigs/balance-and-falls/

I have attached the information about this year's challenge that includes the submission form and the rubrics for judging the winning 3 minute video. Because of the craziness of the times, we will be only presenting one winner. All PT and PTA schools will be competing for the one winning video. We will recognize and share winning, second, and third place videos on the Chapter's web page. After reading the attachment, please let me know if you have questions.

Cut off date is Friday Oct. 16 at 5 p.m. So please forward to the appropriate faculty person to make sure your school is represented in this competition.
Thanks,
Martha Zimmerman, PT, MA Ed
