Dear Students,
As we move into our first simulation session tomorrow, this is a great time to revisit the essential tools of TeamSTEPPS-the foundation of effective teamwork and patient safety. The skills we practice in simulation are designed to become second nature in clinical care, where clear communication and mutual support prevent medical errors.
Remember these key TeamSTEPPS tools:
* Brief - Huddle - Debrief
* Brief: Assign roles, set expectations, and anticipate outcomes before an event.
* Huddle: Reassess the plan and address changes as they occur-any team member can call one.
* Debrief: Reflect together after the event-what went well, what can improve, and one action step for next time.
* Closed-Loop Communication
* Request/Call-Out: Communicate critical information clearly and concisely in real time (e.g., "Patient's BP is dropping-prepare fluids.").
* Cross-Check: Verify that the message was received and understood; listen actively to confirm accuracy.
* Check-Back: The receiver repeats the message back, and the sender confirms it was correct (e.g., "Administer 2 mg IV-2 mg IV confirmed.").
* Mutual Support & Speaking Up for Safety
* CUS Tool: "I'm Concerned, I'm Uncomfortable, this is a Safety issue."
* Provides a structured way to voice concerns respectfully.
* Helps escalate issues before patient harm occurs.
* Two-Challenge Rule:
* Voice your concern at least twice if the initial response is not acknowledged.
* If the safety concern remains unaddressed, "stop the line" and seek resolution through the chain of command.
Your intentional use of these strategies during simulation will help make them a habit for real-world practice. Let's strive to model the teamwork, communication, and psychological safety that define high-functioning healthcare teams.
Warm regards,
Dr. Gerstner
