Q: What is your favorite place to travel?
A: I love to travel and my favorite place is usually anywhere with clear blue water, but I am visiting my daughter in Spain this week so that may become my new favorite place!
Q: What is the most pets you ever had at one time?
A: Right now we just have 2 sweet, silly dogs but a few years ago we had 3 dogs, 4 chickens and a bunny!
Q: What show are you currently binging?
Suits. Is it realistic? Absolutely not. Is it entertaining? Totally!
Q: What is a favorite Raleigh restaurant?
A: It's hard to pick just one! Gonza's in North Raleigh is my go-to spot and it never disappoints. One of my sons worked there for a couple of years during high school and we eat there often. Wye Hill Brewery is a downtown favorite with great food and views. For lunch, I love Tazza's Kitchen and Cantina 18.
Q: What was a highlight of your career as a practicing attorney?
A: Arguing a case at the North Carolina Supreme Court that had significant business implications for my client.
Q: What advice would you give your younger professional self?
A: You don't have to have it all figured out. Your career can evolve and change at different stages of your life in ways that can be extremely rewarding.
Q: What kind of professional mentorship have you found valuable?
A: When I was a young lawyer starting my legal career, the most influential mentors had an open-door policy, encouraged questions and were generous with their time. It really made an impact on me and I have tried to incorporate that philosophy into my own professional life.
Q: What advice would you give law students?
A: Take advantage of every opportunity you can to build relationships while in law school. Whether it is with your law school classmates who will become your colleagues, faculty and staff who are here to help you succeed, or judges and practicing attorneys you encounter on and off campus, talk to everyone and make the most of every single opportunity to connect and learn. Get outside your comfort zone. Be curious. Ask questions and follow up. There are many people who want to help you, encourage you, and empower you to succeed.

Grayson Owens (‘23) always gravitated toward corporate law and transactional work, tailoring his law school experience to prepare him to practice in a business law setting. His preparation paid off, as Grayson recently began his career as the first Campbell Law alumni at the expanding Kaufman and Canoles Raleigh office.
Owens built an impressive resume while in law school, but a few experiences stood out to him as critical in shaping his professional journey. First was his involvement with Campbell Law’s ABA Negotiations Team. Being part of the team refined his ability to negotiate effectively with opposing counsel, a skill critical to success as a transactional attorney. His work with the Innovate Capital Business Law Clinic was also formative. Owens says that learning how to speak with a client and problem solve in real-time, as well as identify and consider future concerns of the newly formed companies such as their exit plan and entity conversion, were key skills his business law clinic experience helped him develop. He advises any student interested in transactional work to consider a semester in the business clinic. Finally, his internship with Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions provided Owens the practical experience that set the stage for his current position. The internship with Toshiba sparked his interest in data privacy, leading him to take the course at Campbell Law and eventually to his current position at Kaufman & Canoles, where his practice includes intellectual property, data privacy, commercial banking, and some white collar criminal defense.
Kaufman and Canoles, a leading business law firm for over 100 years in Virginia, recently opened its Raleigh office and is eager to continue its growth, both in Raleigh and throughout North Carolina. In total, the firm has over 100 attorneys in two states and serves international, national and regional clients in various areas of concentration, including commercial and banking law; business investments; acquisitions and joints; government contracts, data privacy and cybersecurity; and more.
Owens reflects that Kaufman and Canoles provides a big firm feel with a small firm culture and dedicates its resources to best serve clients. The firm is also very invested in being part of the local community, pouring resources into service opportunities to make a direct and positive impact where its members live and work.
Owens and some of the other attorneys at the Raleigh office look forward to meeting students interested in business law at Career Night on November 9th.
