  *   Make sure you familiarize yourself with each phase of the process via Symplicity so you do not miss deadlines or visits from employers of interest to you.
  *   Make sure your resume, cover letter and application materials are polished, up to date and error free. See the Career Center page in Blackboard for tips and advice on your materials or reach out to the Career Center fo help.

The Writing Sample

1. Provide a cover sheet. This is a brief explanation of what your writing sample is.
2. Choose your BEST work. Your writing sample should be a document that shows your analysis and application skills. Quality is the single most important criteria in choosing a sample.
3. Edit, revise, and edit again. Read your potential writing sample with your now-more-experienced eyes, and correct everything that you believe can be improved. If you worry something is unclear - fix it.
4. Use a professional format. The format you use in LRW is a professional format!
5. Remove all distracting names or characters. You want the reader to pay attention to your writing and names can be distracting. Substitute innocuous names.
6. Play to your strengths. Provide an excerpt. Provide the analysis/argument on one issue that you felt was your best writing and stay within the page limit.
7. Submit 10 pages or less. There could also be length requirements for certain jobs.
Note: For 1Ls, your writing sample will be your 1L memo because you don't have anything else at this point. For 2Ls, and 3Ls, if you plan to use work product, please gain permission from your employer and of course redact identifiable information.
