COVER LETTERS ARE KEY!
1. Do not use "To whom it may concern" to address the hiring manager. Address your cover letter to the person you are submitting it to and make sure to include their address information at the top. If there is no name listed, review the website to identify a hiring manager or partner.
2. Include your address, phone number, and email address at the top with your name. Use the same header from your resume. Try to keep this all on one line if possible.
3. Make sure your cover letter is specific to the job. Customize it to that specific employer. Do not copy language from sample letters.
4. Cover letters should connect your experience to the position to which you are applying. How can what you've done relate to the employer's work or benefit them? Do not merely recite your resume and, in fact, you don't need to bring up every experience on your resume. Show them why you are the ideal candidate.
5. Try to keep it to one page. Make sure to review and edit it as you go. See sample cover letters and more tips on Symplicity and Blackboard!
