HOW TO BE A GREAT INTERN
Having a great internship experience will not only make a good impression on the current staff, but may also lead to potential future internships or jobs.

1. Make a Good Impression. Be on time for everything, even if others are more relaxed. Also make sure to dress appropriately.

2. Get to Know The Staff. Introduce yourself to as many people as possible. These connections could potentially lead to others jobs or references in the future.

3. Work Hard. Take initiative and ask for additional assignments or projects once you complete what you are initially asked. Make sure you proofread everything and to always keep it professional.

4. Ask For Feedback. You should be using this internship as an opportunity to grow. Ask for feedback on your assignments to note any ways you may need to improve or great things you should keep up.

5. Remember to use this time to learn. You could potentially want to work in this field one day, so make sure are asking questions and taking notes whenever possible. Ask staff how they got where they are now and any advice they may have for you.

NETWORKING

During an Internship

Introduce Yourself to All the Staff. Try to get to know everyone, not just the attorney you are working for.

Get to Know the Staff and Your Fellow Interns. Do more than just introduce yourself. Try to make a connection so that you are more personable.

Introduce Yourself to Any Opposing Counsel or Other Attorneys You May Meet. Try to keep your Campbell Law Business Cards on you at all times while interning so that you're always prepared in case you meet a new person.

No internship? Try an Informational Interview!

Research Attorneys in Your Interested Field. Find attorneys practicing in areas that interest you. Also reach out to any previous connections you may have.

Contact the Attorney. You can contact them via LinkedIn, email, or any other methods of communication you may have already established. Ask for a 30-45 minute meeting to talk to them. Perhaps over coffee!

Come Prepared With Questions in Mind. Ask them about their professional background, what led them to this field, and any advice they might have for you. Make sure this is conversational instead of just a Q&A!

Don't Ask for a Job. Seek to get to know them for the sake of knowing them. They could offer you a job, but do not ask for one.

Send a Thank You Note. Tell them that you appreciated them taking the time out of their day to talk to you and you look forward to connecting with them in the future. Also ask if there is any other attorneys you should get to know too.

Fall externships will begin posting in Symplicity May 11. Keep checking Symplicity during the summer months as many fall opportunities will be posted throughout the summer.

2022 Southeastern Minority Job Fair

Please consider registering for the 2022 Southeastern Minority Job Fair (SEMJF), a national diversity interview program for students from southeastern law schools. While the program does not have a set definition for diversity, all applicants will be required to upload a diversity statement as a part of their application. The event, which will be held July 14 & 15, is again virtual this year, so you can avoid travel expenses! For over 30 years, career services representatives from our region have worked together to connect students with employers across the country. In 2021, 127 employers from 22 states and Washington D.C. conducted 2000+ interviews. There are positions for every class—1Ls, 2Ls, and 3Ls (summer 2023/post-graduate for 1Ls and 2Ls and summer 2022 post-graduate for current 3Ls). Campbell has had success with students receiving callbacks and job offers through this program.

The first step is to register here<https://campbell.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1a6fdf2eea5cf9d8502036371&id=a47a252a10&e=716d1b6c05>. Registration doesn’t obligate you to apply, but you can’t apply if you don’t register. After completing the registration, you will receive a username and password to access the SEMJF Symplicity system sometime in late May. More information, including a detailed timeline, can be found in the attached document and on the program’s website (www.semjf.org<https://campbell.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1a6fdf2eea5cf9d8502036371&id=7a1272932f&e=716d1b6c05>). Moving forward, if you have questions about SEMJF, please reach out to Director Fonville in the Career Center.
