On Behalf of Campbell Law Honor Court
Members of the Class of 2028,
First and foremost, congratulations on your admittance to Campbell! My name is Reese Dickerhoff and I am the Chief Justice of the Honor Court. I will be speaking to you all tomorrow at 3:45 pm in Room 105, but I wanted to provide you with some important information prior to our meeting. Please read this email in its entirety and take note of any questions you have, which you can either address with me during the Q&A or during my office hours during the semester.
Similar to the legal profession, the student body of Campbell University School of Law is largely self-regulated through a code of honor and professional responsibility. This Honor Code provides for academic standards, non-academic standards, and the procedures to adjudicate and dispose of disciplinary actions when a student is accused of violating the Honor Code. The Honor Court that enforces the Honor Code is composed of three elected justices from each class and the Chief Justice. The class justices serve as jurors and weigh the evidence presented while the Chief Justice presides over the proceedings. All actions are brought by the Attorney General, and all students are guaranteed the right to an appointed defense counsel. In sum, the Honor Court is composed of three different offices: the Justices, the Office of the Attorney General, and the Defense Counsel. I tell you this not only to familiarize you with the Honor Code, but also because in a few short weeks, you all will be electing three individuals from among you to serve as class justices.
Adherence to the Honor Code is important not only because we are a profession with members that pride themselves on ethical behavior, but also because violating the Honor Code can seriously impair your ability to become admitted to the Bar. Among other steps, if you are to be admitted to the Bar, you must graduate from law school, pass the bar exam, and pass character and fitness. When you apply for admission to the Bar, they will require you to disclose whether you have had disciplinary action taken against you while in law school. It is my sincere prayer that none of you have to answer yes, so please take the necessary steps to familiarize yourself with the Honor Code and with the syllabi from your professors to ensure that you are always aware of your ethical obligations.
Attached to this email is the Code of Honor and Professional Responsibility for Campbell University Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law (the "Honor Code"). Please download this document and keep it accessible to you during the course of the year. While you DO NOT need to print the Honor Code before our meeting tomorrow, please take some time to familiarize yourself with the Honor Code before our meeting. I will provide an overview and discuss some important provisions tomorrow; however, it is your responsibility to know your duties and obligations under the Honor Code. Should you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me at hcchiefjustice at email.campbell.edu<mailto:hcchiefjustice at email.campbell.edu> or (910) 585-3474. I am always here to be a resource for you and I look forward to meeting all of you tomorrow.
Very Respectfully,
Reese David Dickerhoff
