Spring 2026 Externship Program: A Step-by-Step Guide
1. Apply for and Secure an Eligible Opportunity
If you have already secured a Spring position, congratulations! If not, there’s still plenty of time to find a great opportunity. Using Career Center resources or your own search, apply for and secure an externship with one of the following: (1) the judiciary; (2) government entity; (3) public interest/non-profit organization; (4) in-house counsel for a corporation or institution; or (5) law firm offering exclusively pro bono work. All field placements must agree to Externship Program requirements.
2. Review the Student Program Manual (Attached)
Prior to applying to participate in the Externship Program, all prospective externs must review the full Student Program Manual to ensure that you understand the details and expectations of the Externship Program. The Student Program Manual is attached to this e-mail and can also be found on the Career Center’s Blackboard page—within the Externships folder.
3. Submit an Externship Approval Application (Link: HERE<https://cuweb.wufoo.com/forms/externship-approval-application-wl4zkyz17d7vt9/>)
Each student must apply to participate in the Externship Program. Use the link above to submit an application that gathers information about your proposed externship. The Director of Externships will review your application and conduct any necessary follow-up with you and/or your proposed supervisor to determine the eligibility of your externship and let you know if you are approved to participate.
4. Enroll in Externship I or II
When class registration opens, register for Externship I if this is your first externship or Externship II if this is your second. If you experience any issues with enrolling, please reach out directly to the Office of the Registrar for assistance.
5. Complete an Externship Agreement
If the Director of Externships approves your externship, you will be e-mailed confirmation and sent an Externship Agreement that outlines the expectations of each party to the externship (Student, Field Supervisor, and Faculty Supervisor). Agreements must be fully executed before the deadline to add a course set by the academic calendar for the semester/term.
6. Show Up!
Satisfactorily complete 135 hours of legal work at your placement and all course requirements (including classes, journals, and other assignments). Students who successfully complete the course earn three credit hours.
