Good afternoon,
I wanted to reach out one last time regarding Mock Trial Tryouts. There are still spaces available on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. You only need to sign up for one time slot on one of the days of tryouts.
If you are on the fence, please try out. It allows you to see if you truly are interested. There is no harm in giving it a shot. You all only have 6 semesters here (you are thinking "thank goodness", I know) but I want you take advantage of as many opportunities as you can while you are able. Additionally, stepping out of your comfort zone usually comes with great rewards. It is always better to take the chance than to be left wondering what would happen if you just tried.
Mock Trial was one of my favorite experiences of law school. It certainly taught me so much and molded me into a better advocate for my clients. I made lifelong friendships and gained mentors.
I'm in Courtroom 312 if you want to come chat with me. I'll be around until 5. Sign up for tryouts can be found here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0845ADAF23A2FF2-48477557-mock. The deadline to sign up is 5 pm today. The application is attached. Please don't worry about class schedule but indicate how many credit hours you intend to take next Fall.
There is no mock trial commitment over the summer. I am conducting tryouts for next year to help me determine how many competitions to sign up for over the summer. You will not have any obligations until Fall 2024.
Best regards,
Mary Ann Matney

Importance: High
1L & 2L Students,
I wanted to reach out again to encourage you to try out for Campbell Law School's Mock Trial Team. If you have any questions about trying out, please come see me in the Advocacy Suite. I will be in my office on Monday and Tuesday of next week as well as Friday afternoon. Please email me to set up a time to chat if you have questions. Also, note there has been some changes to the information requested from you all, since I know you don't have class schedules yet. The deadline to sign up has also been extended until Tuesday, March 26 at 5 pm. However, please sign up for a slot ASAP so I know how many slots to leave open.
Campbell Law School will be competing in a host of mock trial competitions throughout the country this year. This year our teams competed in California, Florida, New York, South Carolina, Connecticut, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.. We've won two regional competitions, and still have three national competitions left to go this semester. Campbell Law School's competitive advocacy program is ranked 9th in the nation! Now is your chance to become a member of our tremendous program. While we have enjoyed past success, we are anxious to identify the next group of outstanding trial advocates to build on our winning tradition.
Formal tryouts for the Campbell Law Mock Trial Team are scheduled for Wednesday, March 27 and Thursday, March 28 (evenings) and Saturday, March 30th. Tryouts are open to all students who will be considered 2Ls or 3Ls for the 2024-2025 academic year. Interested advocates must prepare a five-minute closing argument from the case NITA Liquor Commission v. Jones, et al. I have attached a copy of the case file for your convenience. You may choose to represent either side of the case. Both have equally strong arguments. All students interested in participating in mock trial competitions must tryout regardless of prior advocacy experience. Former participants are not guaranteed a position on the team nor an assignment to any particular competition.
We recognize that all of the current 1L class, and many from the 2L class, have not had Trial Advocacy and most likely have no formal training in preparing or delivering a closing argument. Do not let that dissuade you from participating in tryouts. Other than being a 2L or 3L next year, there are no prerequisites for participating on the Campbell Law Mock Trial Team. In fact, most of the participants chosen in the past have had no experience whatsoever. We evaluate candidates based on a number of factors in determining who may be the most capable, dedicated advocates - so just focus on presenting your best five-minute argument.
Also attached is the Mock Trial Team Tryout Application. Once you have completed your application, please scan your tryout application, your resume, how many credit hours you intend to take for next semester (previously, this was your class schedule. I realize you all have not registered for classes yet for next semester) , then work schedule (if applicable) in that order, in one single PDF document. These materials should be emailed to: matney at campbell.edu<mailto:matney at campbell.edu> and tspears at campbell.edu<mailto:tspears at campbell.edu> by Tuesday March 26, at 5 pm.
Finally, please do not feel compelled to tryout simply because you are receiving this correspondence. We are interested in advocates who strongly desire to participate in courtroom trial competitions and are prepared to do the work necessary to be successful. Our team success is a product of hard work and talent. Neither alone is sufficient. I am immensely proud of our past accomplishments; I'm equally excited about our future.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Mary Ann Matney
