Good morning 1Ls,

This email has a lot of important content and is specifically designed to give you an overview of fall OCI phases that will begin in early July. Please read carefully and take note of key dates.

While it might seem a bit surreal that we are talking about your 2L summer job before you even finish your 1L year and start your first legal job, it is almost time for many of you to start thinking about Fall OCIs and employer recruiting for next summer. Below is an overview of what you need to know now, particularly if your career goals include working for a mid-size or large law firm:

WHAT ARE KEY OCI DATES I NEED TO KNOW NOW?

  *
BIDDING (or applying) FOR PHASE 1 of FALL OCIs opens via Symplicity on Monday, July 8. Interviews for Phase 1 will take place the week of July 29. Note that interviews are often in person, even before classes resume, so keep that in mind when planning the final weeks of summer. The high-level schedule for bidding/interview weeks for all 5 phases is attached for your reference. We will provide more details as we get closer to summer. For now, as you may know, many mid-size and large firms hire for post grad associate positions out of their 2L summer programs, so it is important to participate in OCIs if you want to work in those law firm spaces after graduation. Many mid-size/large firms come on campus and/or participate in resume collects for our students as part of their 2L recruitment process. Some large firms do not participate in on campus recruiting but invite interested students to apply directly to their summer associate programs via their online application portals.
  * On Monday, June 17 you will be able to log into Symplicity to see which employers have signed up for OCIs as of that date. It is important to check back regularly after June 17 as employers will continue to join throughout the summer.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR FALL OCIs, ESPECIALLY THE MID-SIZE AND LARGER FIRM INTERVIEWS/RESUME COLLECTS THAT WILL HAPPEN IN THE EARLY PHASES?

  *
Attend all networking events hosted by firms you want to learn about or to which you may potentially apply for a summer job. More and more often, firms are looking for opportunities to connect with students before a formal hiring process begins. Some will host 1Ls at their office and/or host/attend community networking events before OCIs. Part of preparing for a successful job search can include attending these events, getting to know attorneys, learning about different firms, and establishing connections that will help you (and employers) find the "right fit."
  *
At the end of this email are flyers for TWO UPCOMING EVENTS where attorneys from law firms that regularly hire/engage with our students are making themselves available to meet you. Think of these and other key networking opportunities as investments in yourself. Many of the employers participating in these events will also participate in OCIs, so attending, meeting attorneys and learning about the firms can be valuable.

     *
The Campbell Business Law Association is hosting an in person networking event on April 10 from 5:30-7:00 in the Pope Foyer. You can meet attorneys from firms like Ward & Smith, Smith Anderson, Brooks Pierce and Vann Attorneys. Register via the QR code on the flyer.
     * Williams Mullen in Raleigh is hosting an event at their office on Monday, April 15, and has a robust summer intern program for 2Ls. The link/flyer is at the end of the email and the deadline to register is Friday, April 12.
  *
Our office will host at least one (possibly 2), OCI prep sessions this summer to provide insights and tips on how to effectively prepare for a big law firm interview process and what you need to know. Details matter, and we want you all to be successful. We encourage you to take advantage of all available resources to prepare for the OCI process. Watch the Career Advisor for dates and how to access the program(s) virtually if you will be out of town. Schedule an appointment with our office any time for one-on-one counseling, advice, or just to talk through your strategy about anything related to your career plans. We will be available throughout the summer.

WHAT IF I DON’T WANT TO WORK FOR A MID SIZE OR LARGER LAW FIRM?

Good news! Fall OCIs are still for you! They will stretch into mid-September and typically include a variety of employers, not just mid-size and large law firms, so you will want to pay attention to participating employers (1) via Symplicity and (2) the Career Advisor so you are prepared to apply for positions with employers that ARE of interest to you. It is also important to note that not all types of legal employers participate in fall OCIs or even hire that far in advance of the 2025 summer. As we transition into summer and the fall recruiting season, we will keep you abreast of fall OCI/Resume Collect and other relevant recruiting timelines and programs via our weekly Career Advisor newsletter, which we strongly encourage you to read.
