Good afternoon,
In addition to enjoying much needed down time, we know many of you have plans to spend some of your winter break preparing for the summer job search. If you have not done anything yet, that is OK. You are not behind. But spring recruiting season will officially be underway in January, and if you would like to get a head start, we want you to know what to expect and how to best use your time.
Even if you do not work on your job search over break, we still encourage you to stay abreast of upcoming information by reading the Career Advisor and calendaring important dates listed there and in this email. Doing so will help make your transition into spring recruiting a bit easier, as it will be very busy when we return. Next Monday will be the final Career Advisor for 2023!

DECEMBER things to think about:
When you apply for jobs, your resume should be as close to "perfect" as you can get it. Details are important, especially in our profession. If you haven't done so already, we encourage you to get your resume finalized and in tip top shape before January.
Except for December 21 - January 1 when our office is closed, we are available to review materials, answer questions, etc. We want you to succeed and are happy to be a resource.
As you start to think about cover letters, remember they are extremely important first impressions and can provide employers with a great deal of insight about you as a potential summer associate, intern or extern. Our office regularly engages with employers to get their perspective on all aspects of the hiring process, and cover letters come up often. They are very important in the evaluative process and are used to assess things like:
*
Writing ability
*
Attention to detail
*
Knowledge of the employer and its practice areas/type of work
*
Interest in the position
*
How skills/background/interest make the applicant a good fit for that specific employer
*
How hiring the applicant will benefit the employer
Read next Monday's Career Advisor for tips on cover letter best practices. See the Application Materials folder on the Law Careers Blackboard page for sample cover letters.
Start researching employers. As of today, you can access the schedule for OCIs and see which employers have signed up so far. Start thinking about where you want to apply. Consider creating a sample cover letter for us to review.
You should be able to access the Symplicity job bank now, so you can also start exploring job postings.
JANUARY things to think about::
January 8 - 11: Career Week (this week is specifically designed to give you an overview of what you need to know to be successful in your summer job search).
Throughout this week we will host lunchtime programs in room 105 (with lunch provided for those who sign up) on the following topics:
*
Understanding OCI/Resume Collects and how to use them to get a job
*
Cover Letters - learn best practices in drafting them and common mistakes employers don't want to see
*
Internships v Externships (do you know the difference?)
*
Interviewing Skills
Registration is now open via Symplicity for all Career Week programs.
January 8 - Phase 2 of OCIs opens and 1Ls are eligible to participate
Further down this email is an overview of how the OCI process works so you have a sense of what to expect. The process will be explained in more detail at the Career Week OCI program.
Charlotte Legal Diversity Clerkship: Click here<https://www.meckbar.org/?pg=cldc-about-charlotte> for info or see Symplicity ID # 20349. The application deadline is January 19, 2024. NOTE: We will have an information session about this program as well as the NC Bar Associations' Minorities in the Profession Program in January. More information to come.
NCLIP (North Carolina Legal Interview Program) will be open for student bidding January 14-17. Interviews will be held virtually February 9 - 10. More information will be provided in January, so be on the lookout.
1L Diversity Fellowship Deadlines will come up throughout January. Recent editions of the Career Advisor provide information on many of the programs, and there will be additional programs in next week's Career Advisor. Check Symplicity and individual employer websites and postings for applications and deadlines.

THE OCI AND RESUME COLLECT PROCESS AT A GLANCE
Applying (also known as “bidding”)
* During each week of OCIs and Resume Collects, interested students have from Monday at noon to Friday at noon to bid (or apply) for an interview by submitting resumes and any other materials required by the employer(such as cover letter, transcript, writing sample, or reference list). After 12pm on Friday, students will no longer be able to apply. By 5pm the same day, we will generate an application packet that includes all the resumes/materials submitted by interested students and email this packet to the specified employer contact for review.
* Up to this point, the process for OCIs and Resume Collects is the same. From this point, our office is no longer involved in the Resume Collect process. Once employers receive the resume packet, they will coordinate directly with students to set up interviews.
Employer Selection
* Student bidding ends on Friday at noon. By noon the following Wednesday, the employers will select the students they wish to interview. Sometime after noon on Wednesday, our office will email all applicants indicating the employer has made their interview selections. This signals you to log in and see whether you have been pre-selected for an interview. If yes, you accept the selection. At that time, a list of available interview time slots that have been established by the employer will appear. You will have until noon on Friday to log in and make your time slot selections (or if you do not, we will select it for you). If there is a class conflict, you should discuss it promptly with your professor well in advance of the interview.
Interviews
* On the actual interview date selected by the employer, interviews will take place either on campus in the Career Suite or virtually as designated by the employer. We use the online platform Flo Recruit for most virtual interviews unless the employer prefers something else. There is a video on the Law Careers Blackboard page that walks you through how to use the Flo Recruit platform.
To illustrate the above process using the Spring 2024 OCI schedule, Phase 2 will go like this:
Bidding for 1Ls will open at noon on Monday, January 8. At that time, you will be able to log in to Symplicity and begin the application process. You can log in NOW and see which employers are participating, but you cannot begin applying until each phase of OCIs officially begins. During phase 2, bidding will close on Friday, January 12. You will be notified of your selection for interviews on Wednesday, January 17 and will have until Friday, January 19 to accept the invitation and choose an interview time. Interviews for phase 2 will take place during the week of January 29-February 2 either virtually or in person.
This general process will repeat itself each week (per the chart below) throughout all 5 phases of OCIs.

** Phase 1 is only open to 2Ls and 3Ls
** Phases 2-5 are open to 1Ls, 2Ls and 3Ls
All of us in the Career Center wish you a wonderful break and look forward to seeing you in January!
Warm regards,
