Good afternoon,
We were delighted to see many of you at the recent Judicial Clerkship panel featuring 4 of our distinguished alumni who served as judicial clerks. Here are a few key timeline and resource highlights to be aware of if you are considering a clerkship:
* The application process for clerkships is underway. The process typically begins early in the spring semester of your 2L year and can last into your 3L year depending on the court and individual judge.
* For those interested in federal clerkships, you need to familiarize yourself with OSCAR (the online system for clerkship applications and review). Now is the time to register for an OSCAR account if you have not already done so. Home - OSCAR<https://oscar.uscourts.gov/> .
* Many federal judges accept applications exclusively via OSCAR and follow the timing rules required for OSCAR participants Some judges participate in OSCAR but will also accept applications sent directly to their chambers. You can explore the OSCAR site for federal judicial postings and begin uploading requested application materials. For students in the graduating class of 2026, OSCAR will release online applications to participating judges on June 9, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. EDT. Visit the Hiring Plan<https://campbell.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1a6fdf2eea5cf9d8502036371&id=d8bc7f93b5&e=46c7b0b04f> page in OSCAR for more information on when and how you can access OSCAR.
* There have been recent OSCAR postings for federal judges in NC (as well as judges throughout the country).
* Finalized clerkship applications from current third-year law students and law school graduates are immediately visible to judges and chambers.
* Click HERE<https://campbell.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1a6fdf2eea5cf9d8502036371&id=81bdf9ce81&e=46c7b0b04f> for an applicant prep kit on how to use OSCAR and HERE<https://campbell.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1a6fdf2eea5cf9d8502036371&id=a552e9ae55&e=46c7b0b04f> for a quick reference guide.
* State court judges do not participate in OSCAR and often have varied timelines and processes. Many state court judges hire via Symplicity postings, and some receive applications directly on a rolling basis.
* Judicial Clerkship resources are available on the LawCareers page in Blackboard.
If you are interested in applying for clerkships, we invite you to reach out to our office to talk about the process and see what resources we can help you access. We also encourage you to speak to a faculty member of the Judicial Clerkship Task force with questions. Members include: Professors Zinnecker, Sawchak, Lukasik, Papadima and Kent.
If you have already secured a post-graduation clerkship, please let our office know as we maintain records of all students who clerk after graduation.
Thanks and have a great afternoon!
Warm regards,
Mallory Underwood
