[Law25] Class Rank & Grade Discussions

Dear 1L Students,

A member of the SBA leadership approached my office with concerns that some 1L students may be working on a 'mock class rank' system or otherwise broadly soliciting grade information from students. I write to discourage any such activities if they are occurring. Asking fellow students about deeply personal information, including grades, is inappropriate as a matter of decorum and academic respect. Like any personal information - whether related to your health, personal, or professional life - your grades are your own. Whether you choose to share your academic information is within your own autonomy, but I recommend you keep it to yourself.

Finally, as you approach your first set of finals, I encourage you to worry less about others' grades. Spend this time finalizing your outlines, shoring up complex concepts, and preparing for challenge exams. Grades and class ranks are built over the course of three years. I urge you to keep your head down and focus on your own academics.

Kindly,

Dean Tilly
