Good afternoon students,

Below is a chart of 54 externships positions that remain open for Summer 2023. These are only those who go through the program for postings. More will come throughout the semester and will be posted either by the career center or by the organization itself.  If you have already had 2 externships, many of these employers will allow you to complete the opportunity as an internship (not in-house counsel placements). In addition to these positions, I have listed a few funding sources (not exclusive to externships) that you may want to pursue as well. Finally, I have attached an Externship Program Information Sheet for your reference. Please review it if you are interested. Remember, you can have an externship that is advertised as such OR create your own. (REMINDER: all things externship related can be found in the Law Career Services Blackboard page (Information tab --> Externships folder), including the recording of our January 12th program explaining the difference between an internship and an externship. In addition to the above internship/externship opportunities, I also want to provide information about possible funding.


  1.  The Judge Robert Farmer Fellowship (ID 18306)-1Ls and 2Ls, up to 6 stipends ($2,500) will be awarded PLUS you will have the chance to work with the Wake County Public Defender, Wake County District Attorney, or Wake County Senior Superior Court Judge. Position can be externship or internship. If you have not secured a position with these offices, your Farmer application will be considered an application for the stipend AND internship/externship.
  2.  ProVantage Scholarship (ID# 16619): This scholarship (up to $10,000.00) allows a student to complete an unpaid summer internship with either a Christian law firm or a faith-based organization. Priority will be given to rising 3Ls but rising 2Ls may apply. Submit application after you have secured an internship. JusticeMatters, Transitional Support Legal Aid, Catholic Charities: Immigration Legal Services, and Guirguis Law Firm are examples of eligible sites. All but Guirguis currently have summer openings on Symplicity.
  3.  Equal Justice America (EJA) stipend: Students with placements with a NC-based civil legal services organization serving low-wealth families may apply for semester stipends (up to $2,000 for Fall/Spring and up to $5,000 for Summer).   4.  HEADS UP: Campbell Law has 2 internal summer grant programs sponsored by Campbell Public Interest Law Students Association (CPILSA) and the A.J. Fletcher Foundation. Applications are released in April of each year, so be on the lookout in Symplicity and our weekly newsletter. Students who are interning (not externing) in a public interest law organization are eligible. For the purposes of these funds, “public interest law” means any employment that is unpaid in which the student provides legal services which directly or indirectly serve the poor, needy, or indigent, or clients who have an acute need for legal help due to age, mental or physical condition, financial vulnerability, or lack of access to the courts. It may include legal and social causes that may lack easily identifiable clients (i.e. environmental law). It does not refer to judicial clerkships or placement within a prosecutor’s office. You have to had secured your position at the time of applying.
