[Law24] 2023 Old Kivett Negotiation Competition

Greetings Second and Third Year Law Students,



On behalf of the Old Kivett Advocacy Council, we cordially invite all 2L
and 3L's to sign up for the Spring 2023 Old Kivett Negotiation Competition. The
competition will take place on February 10th and 11th. The competition’s
rounds will take place during the following times:

   -

   Round 1: Friday Feb. 10th, 2023 5:30-6:30
   -

   Round 2: Friday Feb. 10th, 2023 7:00-8:00
   -

   Semi-Final Round: Saturday Feb. 11th, 2023 11:00-12:00
   -

   Final Round: Saturday Feb. 11th, 2023 1:00-2:00

All participants will compete in either Round 1 or Round 2 on Friday Feb.
10th. The top four teams will compete in the semi-final round, and the top
two teams will compete head to head in the final round.



The Negotiation Competition will be held in person.



The Negotiation Competition addresses fundamental skills necessary for all
successful attorneys, namely the ability to identify a client’s needs and
wants in regard to their legal issues and to resolve disputes efficiently
outside of the “traditional” trial setting. The competition will simulate
legal negotiations in which law students, acting as lawyers representing a
client, negotiate a series of legal problems. The simulations consist of a
common set of facts known by all participants and confidential information
known only to the participants representing a particular side. All
simulations deal with the same general topic, but the negotiation situation
varies with each round and level of the competition. Participants will be
scored on a variety of metrics, including achievement of the client’s
objections, strategies used to achieve the client’s objectives, and
civility towards opposing counsel. If you are at all interested in
advocacy, don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to develop and further
these skills, which will set you apart both in interviewing and practice.

to sign up. Please sign up with a partner and put their name in the Google
form. You will be competing with the partner you choose. Only one partner
needs to fill out the interest form. You must sign up by 5:00 P.M. on
February 3rd.

An interest meeting will be held on January 31th at 12 in Room 309. The
meeting will discuss in detail the format of the competition, give general
negotiation competition tips, and provide answers to any questions you
have. If you have any questions in the meantime or want to compete but
