Dear Students,

Happy Memorial Day. I hope this weekend has been one of renewal and reflection.

I am attaching the full course schedule for the upcoming fall. I am delighted we will be offering several new courses that our visiting faculty will be teaching. And, of course, I am saddened that we have had to cancel courses by our faculty pursuing new career opportunities.

Course Cancellations, Additions, and Changes: The course changes and additions are highlighted on the attached spreadsheet in pink. Professor Frohnen is offering two terrific new jurisprudence classes and Professor Ligon will be offering a class on Media Law. We will also offer Sports Law as a class rather than clinic. All of the course descriptions for these new classes are attached. Finally, please note a few classes will be taught by different faculty. Professor Ribeiro will teach a section of Evidence and Professor Ligon will teach a section of Professional Responsibility & Ethics. The Community Law Clinic is being split between work on criminal and civil matters. Please make sure you register for your preferred practice area. Finally, Administrative Law is no longer being offered this fall.

Trial Advocacy:
I am delighted that Professor Romey will be teaching Trial Advocacy this fall. She brings a wealth of experience to our faculty. Separately, I have made a few changes to the Trial Advocacy performance sections. Please make sure the course number (800P) and section (LRXX) now matches the day you want to take the class. Professors Terry, Campbell, Fields, and others will be added to the schedule once we have a better idea of how registration shakes out and where the need will be on each of the three days.

RWE: The RWE requirement is now satisfied by students taking ALW. Students are not required to take a separate class or do independent studies to satisfy the RWE requirement.

2L Students:

All 2L students must complete the following six courses by the end of her or his 2L year:

  1.  Advanced Legal Writing
  2.  Business Organizations
  3.  Constitutional Law II
  4.  Criminal Procedure
  5.  Evidence
  6.  Wills & Trusts

You may take these six courses in whatever sequence you choose so long as you complete them by the end of your 2L year. You may not take them all in one semester, however. My strong recommendation is that you take at least three (3) but not more than four (4) each semester. Any less than three per semester and you risk significant class conflicts.

3L Students:

Prior to graduating, all students must have taken the following courses (in addition to the 1L and 2L required classes):

  *   Professional Responsibility & Ethics
  *   Sales and Leases
  *   Secured Transactions
  *   Trial Advocacy
  * Jurisprudence Course (2 or 3 credits) (listed in the Jurisprudence section)
  *   Planning Course (2 or 3 credit)

I encourage all 3L students to take Trial Advocacy this fall if you have not yet. The spring class will be FULL. All students must complete 90 hours for graduation and have earned a final cumulative grade point average of at least 75.

Please look for additional instructions from Dr. Newsome concerning registration.

Kindly,

Dean Tilly
