[dhsc28] Black Hair in Healthcare Panel!

Hello CPHS students, faculty & staff,

In recognition of Black History Month, you’re invited to attend our Black Hair in Healthcare Panel—a conversation centered on the cultural, professional, and clinical realities of Black hair and how it shows up in healthcare spaces.

This panel is designed for all health professional students and will feature three Black women representing different parts of our health professions community:

  *   A Professor of Physical Therapy

  *   A Professor of Pharmacy Practice

  *   A First-year PA Student

What we’ll be talking about

We’ll explore themes that impact both professional identity and patient care, including:

  *   How messaging around hair (direct and indirect) shapes expectations and bias

  *   The way haircare is deeply integrated into Black women’s daily life, self-care, academics, and professional careers

  *   How hair can influence the feasibility of certain lifestyle modifications (exercise, sweating, swimming, head coverings, etc.)

  *   Navigating professional environments: insecurities, hair choices, and the implications of those choices

  *   The time, planning, and financial cost involved in Black hair care

  *   Practical clinical considerations for providers

Our goal is to create a respectful space for learning, reflection, and practical takeaways that make us better classmates, and better future clinicians.
