Dear students,
As you've wrapped up your first block of medical school, I am sending out some information about research opportunities for you to consider for the summer after your first year. Please take a look at this while you are on break.
Many of you have asked about research during medical school. The summer between your first and second year is the biggest block of time while in medical school to do research, unless you take a year off for research.
This email will introduce you to some summer research opportunities you could consider. You are not behind on planning your summer. However, some programs have fall applications, so please read further.

Summer showcase
We will be hosting a "Summer Research Showcase" in block 2 on October 21 from 2:00-4:00. This event will be led by the second-year students and the CUSOM Research Club. It will include a panel discussion with students who did summer research, some research posters will be displayed from some summer projects, and we will talk about the student-run research publication, JCAM. This event will include the CUSOM summer scholars and students who did research outside of CUSOM.
That afternoon is an OMM Lab day, but you will be broken up into 2 groups for that afternoon, so hopefully you can attend either the first hour of the showcase or the second hour.

Research opportunities outside of CUSOM:
Please see the attached document for a list of the local, regional, and national research opportunities I know about. The first tab in the Excel file contains important information. Please read that first. The list of programs begins on the second tab. Many of these opportunities are renewed each year. If the program has not updated its information for the upcoming summer, we have provided you with the deadlines, etc., from last summer for planning purposes. We will update the document periodically. Note that some of these require a research proposal. If you have a project idea that fits the goals of the program, please reach out to me to talk about it. Also, note that some programs require a letter of good standing. The CUSOM registrar provides that. If you want to talk about any specifics related to any of these programs, please send me an email or ask Clarissa Angeloff to schedule a meeting with me. The default order is alphabetical, but you can sort the items or search to find things that fit your interests.

CUSOM Summer scholars
More information will be coming to you in Block 3. The timeline for summer scholars is that faculty will pitch projects to the research committee early in block 3. After the projects are approved by the research committee, they will be released to the whole first-year class with instructions on how to get more information and show interest in working on a specific project. At the end of block 3, faculty will rank the students who expressed interest; students will rank the projects. The research committee matches the students to projects. We typically have about 35 available spots for summer scholar students.

As I said before, I know that many of you will want to do research while in medical school. We can help to support you. Extracurricular research is not for everyone. Reach out if you aren't sure. We can talk about it.
