Dear Health Professions Student,

How did participating in gross anatomy and cadaveric dissection influence your religious, spiritual, emotional, and existential beliefs? How did your beliefs and life philosophies affect your experience with the gross anatomy component of your degree program?

A group of students at Duke School of Medicine is conducting a research study on the potential impacts of participation in gross anatomy on students' religious, spiritual, emotional, and otherwise existential beliefs. This study seeks to better understand the relationship between the unique experience of gross anatomy in modern medical/health professions education and the personal beliefs of participating students.

* Your participation in this research is voluntary.
* You may discontinue participation at any time for any reason.
* The survey includes questions on topics such as death, personal relationships, spiritual and emotional turmoil, and other personal and private topics that may be unpleasant to think about. It is not our intention to upset or distress you. We hope you feel comfortable to openly and honestly respond to our questions although you are under no obligation to.
* There are no personal benefits from participation in this research. Other benefits include contributing to anthropological research and contributing to new insights in gross anatomy education.
* The anticipated time for completion of this survey is 10 minutes; your participation in the study will conclude at the end of the survey.
* The demographic information collected will be confidential and aggregated as to not identify a singular participant.
* This survey and study are unrelated to your degree program and participation (or lack thereof) has no bearing on your evaluation and performance in class. At Duke, no one but the investigators will have access to survey data and your responses. No one from outside Duke will have access to survey data and your responses.
* Data from this survey and study may be used in dissemination or publication, or future research endeavors.

Daniel Schmitt, PhD is the Principal Investigator and Angel Zeininger, PhD is the co-Principal Investigator for this study. If you have any questions regarding this research, please contact the research team (anatomy_survey at duke.edu<mailto:anatomy_survey at duke.edu>).
